I had just returned to Italy by way of Paris with my boyfriend. I flew back alone to pursue a place I’d wanted to visit. Hours disappeared into unfamiliar buses and instinct alone. My phone sat on airplane mode, nearly dead. No music. No maps. Battery spared only for video.

A lululemon define set. Lanvin ballet flats. A vintage Chanel duffel carrying everything I needed for the shoot—Dior by Raf patent pumps, Pleasers, ripped tights, silver rings, and handmade body jewelry I made myself.

After first walking the wrong direction, I found the overgrown entrance gate and what was likely the hotel’s old service road. It was beautiful. Better preserved than I’d imagined. I could almost see the place before nature devoured it entirely.

I had only just stepped inside when a man walked in behind me and came straight toward me. As our eyes met, he slowed, then drifted away. The second he disappeared into a nearby room, I fled beneath the bushes. Just as embarrassment began convincing me I had imagined the danger, he burst back out, searching in both directions before disappearing around the corner.

A car drove away.

I waited, then went back inside.

Everything became urgent. I abandoned changing outfits and photographed only what remained. Upstairs, the staircase had already begun collapsing. The rooms facing away from the cliffs were pitch black. The silence occupied the rooms before I did.

Then once again, the sound of a car again.

Thinking it might be the same man, I ran to the grand balcony, convinced I could climb what looked like two stories. At the edge, I realized the hotel had been built into the cliffside. It wasn’t two stories.

It was four.

Jagged rock below. Every tree was either too far away or too weak to matter. I slid every .925 ring onto one hand. A Pleaser heel in the other.

As I ran downstairs, footsteps stopped. Then they started running. I committed to surviving and sprinted for the front doors.

Once outside, a car made a hurried U-turn, as though it had seen enough. Only then did I notice the silhouette of a young couple driving away.

My phone died before I made it back with no map, no maps. Just instinct, kindness, and memory.
