I wasn’t supposed to go in ma’s closet growing up but I did anyways… even til this day. Black girls are often adultified from an early age, expected to carry a sense of maturity before they fully experience childhood. Yet within girlhood/childhood, there’s still intimate moments of curiosity, play, and imagination - digging through your mother’s closet, experimenting with her makeup, trying on her clothes, and most importantly, slipping your feet into her heels. As a child, you pick up these beautiful shoes knowing they are too big for you. You stumble around in them anyway. Somewhere in that moment is the quiet understanding that maybe, one day, they will fit. And ultimately: that is how legacy is built, unintentionally. “BIG SHOES TO FILL IN” is an ongoing mixed-media collection that lives within the space between: who a girl is, the woman she watches, and the woman she is expected to become. by @arisrulz

Designer of my dreams, “My Fugly Dress”👗💕 This is for the girl in you, the girl in 13 Going on 30 before she got her wish. This animation lives in that world: awkward girlhood, folklore, and the little daydreams that made growing up feel magical. Being the ugly duckling was honestly the best part. You get a littleee weird. You make your own world. Ultimately, you realize some things were never yours to outgrow.
