Visual exploration and research for “os meus amigos não jogam comigo”

This project explores the nostalgia of a time when friends were part of our daily lives and still played games together. It blends childhood games with traditional ones, evoking the feeling of continuity in how humans have been playing these games for centuries. I often experience this sense of connection when visiting Palácio do Freixo, where there’s a room that once served as the game room of the previous owner. The intricate ceiling design depicts various games, including chess, dominoes, dice, and cards.

In all honesty, I still play some games with my friends—just not the same ones, and not as often, and I hope we can keep playing for centuries.

The title was inspired by a friend’s song, “Os Meus Amigos Não Gostam de Mim” i thought it very fitting. by @aritalaranja

Some of my favorite suits I painted on the ceramic playing cards from the collection “Os Meus Amigos Não Jogam Comigo.”

I don’t think I need to explain how playing cards were a big part of our childhood—pajama parties with my cousins, playing Peixinho, Desconfia, or Polícia e Ladrão. We would invent the most ridiculous games while trying to figure out what the grown-ups were playing at their table so late at night (it was just poker).

Of course, we still play cards together, but it’s not the same—as now we’re the ones playing the “grown-up” games.

Hand built with ceramic earthenware, hand painted with underglazes and finished with glossy acrylic varnish.
