Hacride’s ‘Lazarus’ is an absolute masterpiece in songwriting. From skull-crushing riffs to dissonant melodies, this album weaves through soundscapes and emotions so effortlessly. This became a trademark of the band’s sound starting with ‘Amoeba’, another masterpiece in their catalog. I remember playing with Eccentric Pendulum in Paris (2011) and to our surprise, a lot of folks were aware of Gojira (and rightly so), but not of Hacride. While Gojira is clearly the biggest metal band to emerge from France, I’d say Hacride is extremely overlooked (among a plethora of other French bands like Klone, Step in Fluid, Trepalium, etc).

‘Lazarus’ is so bold that its album opener is 15 mins long. It gives you a sense of everything that the album has to offer. The production is top-notch and was always a north star and benchmark for us at Eccentric Pendulum, for how we wanted our production and output to sound. It took us a while to realise how the production was only suited to Hacride, but that’s a story for another day. Even the artwork was a benchmark, with Eccentric using the same artist, Alex Eckman Lawn, to design the ‘Sculptor of Negative Emotions’ EP cover. Also have a lot of fond memories meeting the band at the IMC (I think) music festival in Goa in 2011, where they were due to play with Cynic but cancelled due to unfortunate circumstances.

As a prog fan, this album really shines on a lot of fronts. The pacing and track order is perfect with each song bringing its own diverse soundscape to the album. ‘Act of God’ is a riff masterclass, while songs like the title track showcase how the band values restraint. Never forced, never abrupt - each transition is well thought through and perfect. From a stylistic point of view, while the band moved to a much more diverse sound on their later albums, I would still argue that ‘Lazarus’ is the absolute peak of creativity and songwriting that the band had to offer.

Favourite song is probably the album closer ‘My Enemy’, another absolute banger that offers so many diverse soundscapes that you long for more when the song ends. Give it a spin! by @arjunmulky

Album 3 on the #FuckAIMusic list.

My dad @anandmulky introduced me to Pretzel Logic and Everything Must Go back in 2006. At a time when i was consumed by Metallica, Iron Maiden, Megadeth and a plethora of metal bands, this stood out.

Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, as I’ve learned after obsessing and reading over, were known for bringing the most eclectic bunch of session musicians on every record. ‘Aja’ is no different. This album, in my eyes, is their absolute pinnacle of perfection.

From the songwriting consisting of complex melodies and intricate passages, to the note choices - everything is so tasteful. I fully agree with Rick Beato saying that it’s ridiculous to think that a song like ‘Josie’ probably got radio time. I can totally imagine folks being taken aback by the dissonant sound of that intro in comparison to anything else that was playing around that time.

Among a near perfect catalog (including Fagen’s solo work), it’s always this album that makes me keep coming back. Having said that, every listen spirals into a rabbit hole of their entire catalog. It took me a while to understand the sheer importance of this band, but there’s no looking back once you’re hooked.

Extremely hard to pin point a favourite song. I probably have favorite moments - obviously the drum solo in the title track (all hail Steve Gadd), the sax solo on Deacon Blues, the lyrics on Home At Last - i could go on.

10/10 recommend if you’re a fan of music in general. One of the most well rounded and tight records of all time. by @arjunmulky

Number 2 in the ‘Fuck AI Music’ series is @btbamofficial

Parallax 1 was my introduction into the band. All it took was the first 3 mins of Specular Reflection to completely envelope my senses. Sure, there are probably better BTBAM albums according to the purists but this holds a special place for me.

You can’t ever speak about this band without getting into their unique songwriting. Probably one of the few bands out there with such contrasting sections in their songs, truly making you wonder how they seamlessly went from one to the next.

Every single musician in the band is a perfectionist. That being said, this album shines a very clear spotlight on the drummer @blakeyeatsteaky who in my eyes almost feels like the second coming of Danny Carey, in terms of inventive drumming, power and finesse. Adding to this, was the fact that Blake’s drumming was showcased in a 40 min single take drum playthrough of the whole album 😂

The lyrics are top and really draws you into the whole theme, setting it up perfectly for Parallax 2 (probably my second fav BTBAM album). The whole “Walking into a certain state of…” section which aptly comes full circle on Parallax 2’s ‘Extremophile Elite’ is a treat for the senses and is a shining example of how this band closes the loop and ties things in perfectly.

It’s hard to recommend this to a certain type of music listener because it really does have every single thing. From punishing death metal riffs to ballad-like clean sections, there’s something for everyone.

Favourite song is ‘Specular Reflection’. It’s a 30min EP that feels denser than some 60min LPs. If i had to club this with Parallax 2, I’d throw in Telos and Extremophile Elite in the mix. Prog fans, check this out. You will not be disappointed. by @arjunmulky

Inspired by @mishaperiphery and his “Fuck AI Music” series. Going to be sharing a bunch of albums that have shaped me and inspired me. I’ll do a quick rundown of each album and why it inspired me, followed by an insight into the high points and best song.

@nev3rmoreofficial has been one of my favourite bands for as long as i can remember. Alongside DT, these guys are one of the reasons the lure of a 7 string guitar was so strong. Among a plethora of near perfect albums in their arsenal, I’d say ‘Dreaming Neon Black’ is in fact perfect. From the inventive riffs to the pummeling drums, the rhythm section of Nevermore has always been top. However, this album is all about Warren Dane and his towering presence as one of metal’s greatest minds.

His lyrics, the pain in his voice (knowing the inspiration behind the album) and his vocal delivery are sublime. The band has always had a revolving door of amazing guitarists, this album is no different. Tim Calvert delivers and how!

I admit it took me a while to get into this album, because my gateway to the band was ‘Dead Heart in a Dead World’, and as any NM fan would agree, that album changed the trajectory of the band and pushed them into the upper echelons of metal. But it’s DNB that still holds the depth, musicality and gravitas of what made the band who they are, atleast in m y opinion.

Fav song is probably ‘The Poison Godmachine’, with the title track and ‘The Fault of the Flesh’ being a close second. Jeff Loomis is probably one of my biggest guitar inspirations and continues to push boundaries.

The band is back with a new lineup and i can’t wait to get an opportunity to watch them live. by @arjunmulky
