Cultures where it was traditionally practiced:

In India, an ancestral tradition, the septum and nasal piercings were worn mainly by women. They were associated with fertility, sexual energy and the womb. They were also connected to the sacral chakra and to Ayurvedic medicine, and seen as a form of spiritual protection for marriage and childbirth.

Among Mesoamerican and Andean peoples, nasal piercings indicated spiritual or warrior status. They were used in rituals, initiations and ceremonial contexts. The materials, such as gold, bone and obsidian, intensified and amplified their symbolic meaning.

In several African tribes, septum and nasal piercings marked the passage from childhood to adulthood and represented strength, endurance and tribal identity. Pain was an essential part of the rite, understood as a symbolic death of the ego.

The spiritual symbolism of the septum is profound.
It represents a threshold, conscious breathing and the flow of life force, prana or spirit. It symbolizes the union of polarities, left and right, feminine and masculine, and is also understood as energetic protection, helping to deflect dense energies that enter through the breath.

One of the things I love most about being a tattoo artist and piercer is being able to see the body as a whole.

My client first came to me today with the idea of turning this delicate mandala into something even more special
The piercing turned out not just as another piece of jewellery but as an extension of what was already there.

And this is exactly the kind of detail that makes me love what I do.

When tattoo and piercing start talking to each other, the result can become something completely different. The jewellery becomes part of the composition, the tattoo gains a new dimension, and suddenly the two pieces feel like they were always meant to be together.

This is the part of my work that really excites me: creating, experimenting, looking at the body from different angles and finding those little connections that make a piece truly yours.

Understanding Piercing Bumps: Granuloma vs. Keloid vs. Hypertrophic Scar

Not all bumps are the same. If you notice a change around your piercing, here is how to identify the differences:

Granuloma: A common inflammatory reaction to irritation, friction, or pressure. It usually appears as a small, red, moist, or dome-shaped bump directly next to the piercing.

Hypertrophic Scar: Firm, raised tissue that stays strictly within the boundaries of the original piercing wound. It often develops due to tension or trauma during the healing process.

Keloid: A dense, overgrown scar tissue that extends well beyond the original boundaries of the wound. Keloids are largely driven by genetic predisposition and do not shrink on their own.

DOUBLE CENTRAL TONGUE PIERCING

Two piercings placed along the centre of the tongue, following its natural anatomy rather than simply copying a measurement.

With a double tongue piercing, placement is especially important: symmetry, tissue thickness, jewellery length and the position of the tongue’s vessels and anatomy all need to be considered before piercing.

The goal is clean placement with enough room for initial swelling then a proper downsize once the tongue has settled.

This is what can happen when a piercing is “cleaned”… but apparently only in theory. 😅

Crust, dried lymph, skin debris, hair and other buildup around a healing piercing can become a lovely little buffet for bacteria. And when bacteria + irritation + moisture decide to move in together, your body may respond with inflammation, swelling and sometimes hypergranulation/granuloma.

Your piercing does NOT need to become its own little ecosystem. 😂

Clean it properly and regularly. Keep the area free from buildup, avoid touching it with dirty hands, and follow the aftercare instructions you were given.

A few minutes of proper cleaning can save you weeks of unnecessary irritation.

And please… “I cleaned it” should not look like this. 🥲 by @arkhanopiercing

MICRODERMAL / SURFACE ANCHOR

A microdermal is a single-point piercing that uses a small anchor placed beneath the skin, with a decorative top sitting flush against the surface.

Unlike a traditional piercing, there is no separate exit point. The anchor remains beneath the skin while the visible top can be selected and, once fully healed, changed to create completely different looks.
