‘The Counterproductive Consequence of Perseverative Cognition’ (or, ‘The Measurement of Bumps on a Skull I’)

The first in a series of three-dimensional collages, this sculpture is the most representational in terms of traditional “portraiture.” Utilizing a silicone mold of a classic portrait bust as a makeshift trash receptacle, refuse from a collection of (previously posted) projects were stuffed into its cavity as I built up (and, tore down) layers on the surface of each panel. Held together by a mixture of resin, glue, acrylic paint, and paper clay, once the mold began to overflow, construction on the outer shell slowly took shape through a cyclical process of addition and subtraction. An astigmatic look at the recognizable features of this “portrait” point a stiff finger toward the storm clouds that drift across the horizon of every unruffled moment.

Additionally, a small fragment of unidentified detritus was left unbridled within the skull of this piece, which makes it a viable option for a newborn’s rattle; the perfect crib-side gift for any philosophical mama’s lil’ thinker. by @arkvb

‘The Abstract Concept of Human Zoochosis’ (or, ‘The Measurement of Bumps on a Skull II’)

The second in a series of three-dimensional collages, this piece hoarded the bulk of my scrap pile, which consisted (primarily) of shards of discarded paper that had been peeled off of the previously mentioned panel projects and saved in a canvas pouch. Leaning into their tubular shape, each roll was individually glued (in circular fashion) utilizing a central core that had been placed in the cavity of a silicone mold and held together with epoxy resin and other discarded material. Driven by the concept of forced repetition and meaningless routine, when viewed from the top down, an interpretive maelstrom of existential depression swirls chaotically in place of our subject’s brainpan, and aims to represent the complex post-traumatic stress-like symptoms created by a prolonged, unnatural “captivity” within modern society. by @arkvb

'The Soothing Repetition of a Maladaptive Daydream’ (or, ‘The Measurement of Bumps on a Skull III’)

The third and final contribution to this series of three-dimensional collages was propelled by stubborn desire and a love of prime numbers. Upon completion of the second sculpture, the recycled materials I’d allotted myself had dwindled substantially, which resulted in a brief confrontation with Trypophobia caused by a litany of cavities that were created after I’d casted a few ounces of resin to solidify my base. These aforementioned cavities were then used as fillable ports, which were stuffed with various paper scraps that had been broken down and pulped in glue and acrylic paint before being sculpted into the shell of a mollusk. The perceived lack of physical substance is meant to represent both the scraping of a barrel bottom, as well as the overwhelming degradation of societal behavior. by @arkvb

This post may not be a grungy xeroxed handbill for an upcoming show with 5 or 6 bands playing in some kid’s basement, but the act of self-promotion here does bear a striking resemblance.

To anyone that caught (and, perhaps enjoyed) my recent string of drum videos (reels), throughout the process of recording them, I found myself swimming in a curious cask of catharsis, which presented itself to me in a surprisingly welcome and organic manner. I’ve since expanded what began as a casual exercise into a slick side-project publication called A Resonant Skin.

In essence, this publication is a retrospective look at my personal history as a musician, though specifically, as a witness to the spectacle of musicianship and the profound effect it’s had ON my life as a musician. The fortune of influence I’ve been awarded over the years (my relationship to it, and the overarching result of it) cannot be understated. Anecdotal meanderings tap the origins of discovery, with an emphasis on the emotional impact and lasting resonance therein. Each post will contain a tributary drum cover, which is meant to pay homage to the musicians that propelled my adolescent ambition, and those that inspired the development of my “signature style.”

My introductory “soundcheck” is now available for mass consumption, which outlines the genesis of this project. If you have 5 minutes, cruise by the show to check it out and subscribe. Then, you can boast about how you were into it before anyone else knew it existed. It’s FREE for all (though, there IS a crusty hat circling the venue, for anyone feeling spendy). Hope you can make it, and more is on the way!

Make no mistake: this is not a promotion for an analog sound storage device made of polyvinyl chloride, though the substance behind this striking visual enticement does carry a recorded history.

'The Invocation Of Periphery'

An experiment in contemplative meditation, this composition explores the imminent declination of categorical memory. In particular, the marquee reminiscences one cherishes immensely, but often fails to nurture and luxuriate in while gathering wool and building castles in the sky. As we navigate the complexity of time and space, once vivid memories begin to dance in the dreaded haze of distance, like so many shimmering phantoms. by @arkvb

'The Perfidious Yarn Spinner'

An experiment in contemplative meditation, this composition explores the depths of implicit memory. In particular, the brand of unintentional memorization one would rather forget but remains bound to and haunted by ad nauseam. Like an insidious presence slyly manipulating time and experience by impregnating its endless feedback loop with degradation and noise, this subconscious bombardment of over-stimulation pushes our evolutionary perspective into a perpetual state of hysteresis. However, if one can manage to situate an adequate vessel under the nozzle, the optimism is on tap! by @arkvb
