The salon continues to unfold, and one gathering has a way of summoning another.

With thanks to Dan Callahan for the idea of taking the salon to Pace; to filmmaker Guy Wernick (@guywernick) and painter Andrew Hammell Race (@andrewhammellrace) for documenting these occasions; and to Pace Gallery (@pacegallery) for their wonderful work and for allowing us to go through with our visit.

I’ve long desired to bring people together to share ideas about books, film, and art, believing that works of art deserve equally good conversations, which in turn give rise to new works of art.

Rather than following a single format, each gathering will revolve around a different subject. That may be a book, a film, an exhibition, a place, or another shared fancy.

Our inaugural salon centered on Andrew Durbin’s (@andrewdurb1n) dual biography of Peter Hujar and Paul Thek, The Wonderful World That Almost Was. We spent the evening discussing the book, reflecting on artistic communities and the fragile conditions that allow remarkable art to flourish.

We then played a Surrealist game: each participant wrote an anonymous note to be hidden inside a book at a local library or second-hand bookshop, introducing mystery into a stranger’s life.

I’m grateful for everyone that made an appearance, for Dan Callahan’s generous encouragement, to my dear Athena Kokoronis (@d_media_p_mom_a) for lending three beautiful pickle-juice prints by Walker Tufts (@jw4lker): Untitled (1970), 96 Sacraments, and a portrait of Paul Thek and Peter Hujar. (Some of those same pickles found their way into our martinis.)

Filmmaker Guy Wernick (@guywernick) beautifully documented the evening.
