Slav, my name is Helan Ahmed, founder of Armanj Collective. The idea of nonprofit work often crossed my mind while pursuing my degree in international human rights back in 2016, but like many dreams, life placed it on the back burner. It wasn’t until I had my first child in 2024 that this dream sparked back to life – and this time with a mission.

Like many of us in the diaspora, I longed for spaces where we feel connected to our culture, language, and community. As someone born and raised in the diaspora, I began thinking about how I would raise my children to feel confident in their identity, language, and heritage.

The name “Armanj” carries meanings of purpose, aspiration, and the deeper feeling behind what we strive for. It is rooted in hope, vision, and intention. This name felt right for this nonprofit not only because of its meaning, but because it was also my late brother’s name.

Armanj Collective was founded from a place of care, longing, and responsibility – to create spaces where Kurdish children and families feel connected to their identity, culture, and community.

In honor and loving memory of my brother, Armanj Ahmed.
