MIMMO JODICE, “IMMAGINI DEL VUOTO: dalla camera oscura alla camera chiara”, curated by Andrea Viliani with Linda Fregni Nagler and Armin Linke | VISTAMARE MILANO | OPENING September 30th, h 7 - 9pm | #nextweek

Vistamare is pleased to present IMMAGINI DEL VUOTO: dalla camera oscura alla camera chiara, an exhibition dedicated to Mimmo Jodice (Naples, 1933–2025), curated by Andrea Viliani in collaboration with the artists Linda Fregni Nagler and Armin Linke, and organised in close collaboration with the Mimmo Jodice Archive.

A central figure in contemporary photographic history and research, Jodice has developed an independent yet radically committed practice focused on establishing photography not as an act of representation but as a meditation on reality – a combination of gestures and thoughts, physical and metaphysical elements, space and time.
The exhibition – the fourth devoted to the artist at Vistamare, and the first after his passing – is curated by Andrea Viliani together with artists Linda Fregni Nagler and Armin Linke, whose research is, in turn, focused on investigating stories and epistemologies, materialities and (dis)functionalities, compositional structures and expressive dynamics of the language and medium of photography.
As a result of their respective archival research, the documents and works on display (some of them have never been shown before) are arranged in an open and interconnected triptych – also distinguished by varying gradients of light – which introduces and reinterprets some of the possible dimensions and enduring aspects of Jodice’s research, allowing visitors to draw their own synthesis.

PAPARAZZI by Armin Linke and Corrado Calvo

Everyone knows these kinds of photgraphs from glossy magazines: snapshots of fast boats, dark sunglasses and dalliances. Whoever shows themselves on the beaches of Sardinia also acknowledges those others, lurking behind their cameras. Celebrities and paparazzi are symbiotically intertwined; they produce “secret images” in collaboration. Together with Corrado Calvo – one of the most famous paparazzi to date –, Armin Linke has published a selection of sequences from a conglomeration of 80,000 images from the early noughties. Within the image series shown in the publication, a different kind of logic becomes apparent that stands in contrast to the published image from mass media: Their staged character becomes obvious. Whatever is cut out of the situations shown in the magazine images only becomes evident in the sequential nature of the pictures. The photos thus unexpectedly become social documents.

The Renaissance saw the birth of many dynasties connected to the arts in Italy. Among those was the house of Antinori (@MarchesiAntinori), whose history of winemaking dates from 1385.

Spanning 27 generations, that legacy lives on in their spectacular vineyards, including the one in the village of Bargino, south of Florence, where the family originally began making wine. It’s there, at Antinori nel Chianti Classico, in a dazzling contemporary building by @Archea_Associati, that oenology and the arts come together in the Antinori Art Project. Launched to commemorate the opening of the architectural marvel in 2012, the special endeavor commissions artists to produce works inspired by viticulture.

Now joining their ranks is Italian photographer @ArminLinkeOfficial, who over the course of a year visited the vineyard for extended stays to enmesh himself in every facet of production. In his series titled “Sampling the Vineyard,” curated by Ilaria Bonacossa (@Ila.Bonacossa), he applies the foundations of his artistic practice, which delves into systems of knowledge and the complex infrastructures of modern society.

EISBACH

„For the entrance room of Tomás Saraceno’s exhibition „Ancestral Futures“, Linke took a photograph of the Eisbach river.
The triptych draws on the tradition of Romantic landscape painting while revealing how people have transformed the Munich English Garden from an “artificial wilderness” into a shared public space open to all. Linke’s image enters into a quiet dialogue with the seating area covered in blankets by Red Atacama. Both works speak of places shaped not only by geography but also socially, by the people who inhabit and use them. In each, landscape is presented not as property, but as a commons – something to be shared collectively.“ (text by Sarah Johanna Theurer)

Neutrinos & Dark Matter launched its first public chapter as a collaboration between the Academy of Fine Arts Munich (AdBK), the Technical University of Munich (TUM), and Haus der Kunst, bringing together young artists and astrophysicists. Neutrinos & Dark Matter approaches astrophysics as a field of imagination, perception, and encounter, where scientific instruments, invisible particles, environments, and human presence come into relation. Conceived as a series of temporary interventions, the project will continue to unfold over the coming years within Open Haus, opening conversations around forms of knowledge, the unknown, and how we experience worlds beyond direct visibility together with the public.
