August is another month of thrillers for me, and I think I’m reaching the point where I’ve read enough of them to recognize a lot of the usual formulas and clichés. I’ve been predicting twists more often lately, but that doesn’t mean I’m not enjoying the books. Sometimes I can see what’s coming and still have a damn good time.

Here’s what I read this month:

1. That’s Not My Name by Megan Lally — ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Predictable and nothing particularly new for me. It follows a familiar thriller formula, but it was still entertaining enough to keep me reading.

2. Keep It in the Family by John Marrs — ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book had me questioning everything. There were so many things happening, but by the end, I was left with one question: What is the purpose of everything when no one is saved?

3. Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter — ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I wish I never read this. I had to completely detach myself from the book so I wouldn’t visualize what I was reading. This was heartbreaking.

4. The Witch by Freida McFadden — ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really liked this in the beginning, but Julia’s timeline became too slow for me. Caroline’s POV kept me interested. I was almost giving this 3 stars, but the twists pushed it back up to 4.

5. The Unknown by Riley Sager — ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Only One Left was still much better, but I had fun with this one to give it anything less than 5 stars. Some of the twists were predictable and some of the ideas felt familiar, but it was gripping and entertaining enough that I simply didn’t care.

Some months just hit different, and July was one of them. I loved every single book I picked up, which almost never happens.

July was easily my best reading month so far. My favorite has to be The Butcher by Jennifer Hillier. That one completely lived up to the hype.

It Could've Been Her by Lisa Jewell ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Local Woman Missing by Mary Kubica ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Got hit with so many DNFs during the second quarter of this year (April to June) that I only managed to finish three books.

⭐ The Intruder by Freida McFadden: ★★★★☆
A fast and entertaining thriller that kept me hooked.

⭐ The Divorce by Freida McFadden: ★★★★★
I was so close to giving this 4 stars, but that twist completely caught me off guard. It absolutely earned that fifth star.

⭐ The Only One Left by Riley Sager: ★★★★★
Without a doubt, the best book I've read this year so far. I devoured it because I couldn't stop until I uncovered the truth. And just when I thought all the twists had been revealed, another one came out of nowhere. I honestly don't think anyone could guess what really happened in the past or what was actually going on in the present. What a wild ride!

The DNF Curse Ends Here!

Finally found books I can actually finish! After what felt like an endless DNF streak, I think my reading slump is finally over.

I'm nearly 50% through The Divorce by Freida McFadden, and I just started Alchemised by SenLinYu and I'm completely hooked already and I'm confident this one is making it to the finish line.

Now the real challenge is resisting the urge to peek at the other books on my TBR and staying focused on these two until they're finished. Wish me luck!#Bookstagram #CurrentlyReading #BookLovers #readersofinstagram #BookCommunity by @armyhersheyreads

DNF Reads So Far This Year 😔

Not proud to admit it, but I've officially DNF'd six books so far this year.

Some have been sitting on my shelves for ages: Never Never by Colleen Hoover, 31 Dream Street by Lisa Jewell, and Iron Flame. While I'm certain Never Never isn't a book I'll ever return to, I struggled with the decision to finally let go of 31 Dream Street and Iron Flame. They're good books. The writing is solid. They just aren't the kind of stories that make me excited to pick them up. After months of neglecting them, I had to accept that there are simply too many other books I'm genuinely eager to read.

More recently, I started Heartless by Marissa Meyer and The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. I'm nearly 50% through both, but the excitement I felt at the beginning has faded, and I've found myself losing interest. That doesn't mean they're bad books. They're not. They're just not the right books for me.

Then there's The Dinner Party by Freida McFadden. Honestly, I have no idea why this book exists. I made it through one chapter before deciding it was a complete waste of my time. No regrets dropping that one.

As for Freida's newest release, The Divorce, I'm currently reading it and hoping it ends up being one I actually finish.

Not my usual genre, but these 4 from Bantam Love Stories made it into my teenage reading era. Unexpected but somehow memorable.

Throwing it back to my teen reading days 📚✨ Five books that kept me up at night: 3 Nancy Drew Files mysteries, Sweet Audrina by V.C. Andrews, and Chain Letter 2 by Christopher Pike. Teenage me was all about suspense, secrets, and a little drama!

Last quarter reads (Oct–Dec 2025), stacked, rated, and absolutely no regrets… well, almost.

(1) The Perfect Marriage – Jeneva Rose ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Tight, nasty, and impossible to put down, every twist felt personal.

(2) Before Goodbye – Harlan Coben & Reese Witherspoon ⭐
Big names, big letdown, I kept waiting for it to get good and it never did.

(3) The House Across the Lake – Riley Sager ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Unhinged in the best way, I trusted no one and loved every second of it.

(4) Ask for Andrea – Noelle Ihli ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Dark, raw, and quietly devastating, stayed with me longer than expected.

(5) Wild Side – Elsie Silver ⭐⭐⭐
Fun, flirty, and fine, enjoyable but not one I’ll think about twice.

My bestselling reads from July to September kept me turning pages, crying, laughing, and questioning everything 👇📚✨

Don’t Let Him In by Lisa Jewell ★★★★★ – Jewell nailed the claustrophobic paranoia of not knowing who to trust, and I couldn’t put it down.

The Fury by Alex Michaelides ★★★★☆ – The island setting was so eerie it felt like an extra suspect in the murder mystery.

Friends, Lovers, & the Big Terrible Thing by Matthew Perry ★★★★★ – His honesty was so raw it felt less like reading a memoir and more like hearing a late-night confession.

The Surrogate Mother by Freida McFadden ★★★☆☆ – Twisty for sure, but compared to her others it felt more like shock value than substance.

Confess by Colleen Hoover ★★★★★ – The way real confessions were woven into the love story made it unforgettable and painfully beautiful.
