The “Branch Boulder”series for Abide. This series has been created for the Abide housing initiative by Arnello Berneti founder Terry Slaughter and Arnello Berneti Artistic Director Jonathan Niega. Bronze branches are set into boulders which are set upon bronze bases.

Abide is a collaborative brand created by Arnello Berneti and its sister 501c3 non profit the Simon Cyrene Group. The Abide homes are modernist homes created for families who have in the past been denied any opportunity for home ownership. Abide homes are designed by the Arnello Berneti team and all homes are curated and furnished with Arnello Berneti designed objects for the interior as well as exterior gardens. The Branch Boulder series will rest at the end of a long interior hallway seen from the front entry all the way through to the back of the first Abide home. by @arnelloberneti

Perhaps essence is not something we create, but something we uncover. It waits beneath the noise, beneath all we have gathered and named.

We search for it in beauty. In silence. In the fleeting light upon a wall. In the face of another. In the imperfect mark of a hand. In those rare moments when the world becomes still enough to reveal what it has always known.

There is a temptation to believe that more will bring us closer. More thought. More ornament. More explanation. Yet essence seems to ask the opposite of us. It asks that we listen. That we look again. That we remove rather than add.

To find the essence of a thing is to slowly take away what is unnecessary until only the truth remains.

Not emptiness, but fullness. Not absence, but a presence that no longer needs to announce itself.

Perhaps this is why the things that move us most often feel strangely familiar. A melody we have never heard. A place we have never been.

For when we arrive at what is essential, we rarely discover something new. We discover something remembered.

Something that was there from the beginning. Even before time. Truth.
The revelation is the transcendence. by @arnelloberneti

“Our truest life is when we live our dreams awake.”
Thoreau’s proclamation is indeed infused within the heartbeat of Arnello Berneti. I Often Wonder has been a dream even before Arnello Berneti became a reality. Perhaps both were destined to meet. Arnello Berneti was created to live our dreams daily. This means pursuing various paths to creativity that will always lead to some level of transcendence. We live in a constant state of wonderment. I Often Wonder is a publication in the works that explores the subjects we, well, wonder about. Every issue will explore different subjects, all born out of a dream, in all cases, a dream born out of wonderment. And that wonderment, in most cases, is born out of yearning. It is a yearning for what was or what can be or what must be or what will be, but it is in the union of the yearning and the wonderment that the dream is lived awake.

The first issue of I Often Wonder was born out of wondering what happened to the gentle and romantic experiences of being on the lake. The simple cottages tucked within nature and the unhurried life lived there. Sadly, it seems to have succumbed to the proliferation of lake mansions, pontoons, and jet skis. We wonder why. And we yearn. We yearn for simplicity. We yearn for stillness. We yearn for humility. We yearn for Blue Arrow Lake. It is not a place on the map. It is a place in the mind and a place in the heart. The yearning leads to wonderment, and the wonderment leads to discovery. Issue one of I Often Wonder reveals the spirit of Blue Arrow Lake: the place, the architecture, the interiors, the clothing, the lifestyle.

Thoreau made another proclamation. “Most men live lives of quiet desperation.”
Not so shall we live.
We will dream
and we will dream awake
and we will wonder.

In creating the new name and corporate identity for Pittsburgh-based United States Steel’s (USS) entry into the home-building market, we sought to craft a name and identity that forged the inanimate with the animate. Steelvine is the result of this union, embodying the resilience and safety of steel construction while honoring the principles of economy and sustainability. by @arnelloberneti

Beautiful design should not be reserved for the wealthy. This is one of the essential tenets of Abide. The irrefutable truth is that beauty enlivens the spirit and that when we surround ourselves within beauty, there is transcendence. We firmly believe this experience of transcendence can be and should be realized by all. As we soon begin construction on our first Abide home pictured above, we embark on this journey of transformation. It is, we pray, a transformation of lives. The lives of others, but of our own as well. This is the interconnectivity of beauty and design, and love and grace. This is the true dance with Beauty.

Abide is a 501(c)(3) program established by Arnello Berneti founder, Terry Slaughter, as an affordable housing initiative that provides homeownership opportunities for individuals and families in need. The architectural, interior, product, and landscape design has been created by the Arnello Berneti team. Our mission is to create and build housing that we ourselves would want to inhabit. taken in East Lake, Birmingham by @arnelloberneti
