As promised, here are my favorite dark or velvety Anthuriums to grow in ambient air. Here in zone 5a it can get really dark and super dry for 5 months a year. I’ve found out these selected Anthuriums grow well for me if:
🖤I gradually transition them into ambient air or grow them in drier conditions right from the start
🖤I have growlights on for 12hrs/day
🖤I try to stay consistent with their watering without letting them dry out completely
🖤You don’t get discouraged from few yellowing or crusty leaf tips. It happens even in their natural habitats!

Answering the most frequently asked question: What do I grow my Alocasias in?

•I layer 1/3 - 1/4 leca (sometimes with perlite or gravel) with 2/3 - 3/4 sphagnum moss in a cylinder shaped glassware. Mostly thrifted drinking glasses or @kukkatalo.fi ’Hurrikaani’ vases
•I keep water in the leca layer 👏🏻at all times👏🏻
•I size up the glass vase as the plant’s root system grows
•Algae build up is real, so be prepared to change the moss and clean out the vases once or twice a year
-> Easy watering, strong roots and lush growth

It takes time to grow - a statement I saw somewhere when I was studying in Japan. I’ve been carrying that sentence with me for nine years now. I realized it applies to every aspect of my life including my plant hobby ➡️

I bought my first houseplant in 2018 after getting back home from Japan. In 2019 I had under 10 plants, in 2020 under 20, and so on. In 2023 I already had almost 100 plants including my first 4 Anthuriums. I tried to absorb all the available information but still I struggled. I kept studying, unaliving them and trying to learn from my mistakes.

After 3 years one greenhouse cabinet became three and I’m able to hold almost 50 Anthuriums in my collection (many luckily still small). Along the way I’ve learned to try new things, ask help from other Anthurium hobbyist and forgive myself for my mistakes. I can’t wait to see where these plants and this supporting Instagram community takes me. by @aroidmonstre
