Winter ARC 2026 done! Thank you to instructors Meg and Alex for a great 8 weeks! We just had our recital and while Alex’s song (難しい) was said to be one of the longer ones an ARC has ever one it was still so much fun! San Jose Taiko’s Adult Recreation Class is a great way to learn and experience playing Taiko and if you’ve ever been interested I highly recommend checking out their beginner workshop schedule on their website. @sanjosetaiko @sanjosetaikoarc @taiko @drum by @arone0s

Visited the Charlie’s Acres animal sanctuary in Sonoma over the weekend. What a wonderful place with extremely knowledgeable and caring staff that work with these rescued farm animals. Each animal we interacted with was unique with their own personalities and quirks, all were adorable. The pigs loved getting their bellies rubbed and would flop over to let you pet them more. The turkeys were really interested in our clothing and showing off, also loving to be pet on their backs. The chickens happily ate leaves from our hands. The cows came running over when the guide brought us near them, they knew it would be snack time with some good petting. The goats and sheep were super silly. The sanctuary had a section for some of the more elder and special needs animals where one had a cute wheelchair to help her get around. Had a great time at this years Universal Halloween horror over the weekend! Nintendo world is so fun with all of its mini games and challenges, plus Mario Kart is the best. Some of the haunted house mazes had such cool environments and ambiences and others were just silly fun, you could tell some of the scare actors had a good time creeping up on people and making them jump. I had such a blast doing my first San Jose Taiko Adult Recreation Class! We spent 8 weeks preparing, drilling and practicing for our recital where friends and family got to come and watch us perform two songs: Yorokobi Taiko and Oku No Kyoshi. While the classes can be hard to get into with the demand being so high I encourage anyone who has ever had an interest in trying it out to check their website for upcoming workshops and ARCs: taikoconservatory.org. One day in Singapore wasn’t enough! We had a 7 hour layover and decided to leave the airport to explore as much of the city as we could. Through the intense heat and humidity we explored 7 miles around the Marina and went to the Gardens by the Bay. There was a beautiful orchid exhibit at the flower dome and a really neat Jurassic Park exhibit at the Cloud Forest. Afterward we went to Lau Pa Sat for some yummy foods before heading back to the airport. There’s still so much more I want to see and will make it a point to make an actual trip to Singapore someday soon. #singapore #gardenbythebay #flowerdome #cloudforest #jurassicpark by @arone0s

Our Bali, Indonesia trip was a blast! We started in Ubud and visited the monkey forest and the downtown shopping areas for food and souvenirs. On our way to the Mount Batur Caldera we stopped by one of the stepped rice plantation nestled in the jungle mountains and then a coffee plantation which produces the Luwak coffee which is a digested bean before processing and consumption. The plantation also had cacao, coconut, and a bunch of other fruits and herbs that they had mixed with different types of delicious coffees and teas. Many of the Luwaks were free roaming and enjoying pets from the tourists.
After Mount Batur we went to the north shore in Amed for snorkeling tours and got to enjoy the warm ocean currents while watching the fish, reef, and adorably playful kintamani dogs. On our way to Jasri bay we stopped by the Bali famous heavens gate and Tirta Ganga garden. One of our past destinations was the water palace in Jasri Bay which was a beautiful royal garden filled with layers of flowers and neat architecture. Our Jasri Bay hotel was a cute little beach cabin and at night the sky was dark enough to see a ton of stars(southern hemisphere stars are so different!). Cambodia part 2: visited Angkor Wat for the sunrise and spend most of the early day exploring many of the surrounding temples. Each one unique in their own way. One of my favorites was Neak Pean which was surrounded by a huge man made lake full of blooming lotus flowers 🪷. The day was extremely humid and hot but every time I came back to my tuktuk the driver was offering me an ice cold water and a cold towel to cool down with. Visiting the temple complex was an unforgettable experience and I can’t wait to visit again to see more of temples that are located further out. During the evening I visited the old market and pub street to check out the local and tourist scene while also getting small souvenirs.

Cambodia part 1: I went to the #APOPO center in Siem Reap and got to meet some of their hero rats. These African giant pouch rats are about three times bigger than our biggest pet rats and are absolute sweet hearts. The ones at this center are trained to sniff out land mines and other explosives left over from the many decades of war and conflict in the region but can also be trained to search for survivors in disasters and tuberculosis in those who are affected. Such smart babies!
They are not heavy enough to set off the explosives and they get yummy rewards when they find something to remove. Also there were a group of students protesting the conflict between Cambodia and Thailand as they organized through the main market streets along the river.

Had such a great weekend at the San Jose Obon festival and got to see so many familiar faces having a blast! This was the first year we participated in the Obon Odori after practicing the 1.5 hours of dance moves over the last two weeks 😬.
