Lewis Hamilton has actually won the Spanish Grand Prix (held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya) an incredible six times (2014, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021).
While many of those were dominant displays from pole position, his most famous and thrilling victory in Barcelona was undoubtedly the 2021 Spanish Grand Prix. It was a tactical masterclass in his legendary rivalry with Max Verstappen.
Here is how he pulled off that specific iconic win:
1. The Losing Start
Hamilton started on pole position (his 100th career pole!), but Max Verstappen got a brilliant launch from P2. Verstappen aggressively lunged down the inside into Turn 1, forcing Hamilton to back out to avoid a collision. Hamilton spent the entire first stint of the race staring at the back of Verstappen's Red Bull.
2. The Strategic Gamble (The "Two-Stop" Masterstroke)
Barcelona is notoriously difficult for overtaking, and by lap 42, it looked like Verstappen had the race in the bag. That is when Mercedes and Hamilton pulled off a tactical gamble:
The Surprise Pit Stop: Mercedes called Hamilton in for a second unexpected pit stop, putting him on a fresh set of Medium tires.
The Dilemma for Red Bull: Verstappen couldn't track the pit stop because if he pitted a lap later, Hamilton would have already jumped him. Red Bull was forced to stay out on old, dying tires and pray for the best.
3. The Hunt
When Hamilton emerged from the pits, he was over 22 seconds behind Verstappen with less than 24 laps to go.
What followed was a relentless, qualifying-style pursuit. Hamilton was lapping over a second faster than Verstappen every single lap, chipping away at the gap.
4. The Overtake
With just 6 laps remaining, Hamilton caught up to the back of the Red Bull. With the help of DRS down the main straight, he easily swept around the outside of Verstappen into Turn 1 to take the lead.
With his tires completely shot, Verstappen immediately pitted for a consolation fastest lap, leaving Hamilton to cruise to victory.
The Barcelona Legacy: This 2021 victory tied Hamilton with Michael Schumacher for the most wins in Spanish Grand Prix history (6). It's widely considered one of the best examples of teamwork between Ham by @aros_h71
