Back_in_Time_ | 'Dutch club history'
Episode 2 - iT

In 1989, iT opened in Amsterdam. What followed was a new chapter in nightlife.

While other clubs focused on music or art, iT focused on image, energy and presence.

On any given night, the entrance was just as important as the dancefloor. The door policy became legendary. Not about money, but about how you looked, how you moved, how you carried yourself.

Fun fact: people would stand in line for hours, not just to get in, but to be seen standing there.

Inside, the club felt larger than life.
Dancers on podiums, flashing lights, a crowd that looked like it stepped out of a magazine.

House and progressive sounds filled the room, but the real attraction was the atmosphere.

iT attracted a mix of creatives, fashion figures and international visitors. It quickly became one of the first clubs in the Netherlands with a truly global reputation.

Where RoXY was chaotic and experimental, iT was sharp and controlled.

Two different worlds. Same city.

iT showed that nightlife could be more than music.
It could be identity, status and spectacle.

Back_in_Time_ | ‘The Rise Of Ibiza’
Episode 1 - Pacha
Before Ibiza became the global capital of nightlife, before superstar DJs, VIP tables and sunrise sets, there was a small white farmhouse on the edge of Ibiza Town.
That farmhouse would become one of the most iconic clubs in dance music history: Pacha Ibiza.
The story actually began in 1967, when brothers Ricardo and Piti Urgell opened the very first Pacha in Sitges, near Barcelona. The name came from a joke by Ricardo’s wife, who told him that if the club became successful, they would live like a “Pacha” - an Ottoman ruler known for wealth and luxury.
A few years later, Ricardo visited Ibiza.
Back then, Ibiza looked nothing like the island we know today. It was a small Mediterranean escape attracting hippies, artists, musicians and free spirits from all over Europe. Tourism was still developing and many people thought opening a nightclub there was a huge risk. Ricardo saw something different.
On 15 June 1973, Pacha Ibiza officially opened its doors inside a traditional Ibizan finca. The club quickly became one of the first major nightlife destinations on the island and helped shape the future of Ibiza’s club culture.
One of the most famous symbols in dance music history also came from Pacha: the two red cherries.
Interestingly, the cherries were not part of the original concept. They appeared years later during the early 1980s and eventually became one of the most recognizable logos in global nightlife culture.
More than 50 years later, the cherries remain one of the strongest symbols in dance music culture, and Pacha continues to define what Ibiza feels like for millions of clubbers every summer.
What started as a small farmhouse on the edge of Ibiza Town has grown into one of the most influential clubs in dance music history.

Back_in_Time_ | 'Dutch club history'
Episode 1 - RoXY

In 1987, RoXY opened in Amsterdam. What started as an alternative club quickly became the epicentre of house music in the Netherlands.

By 1988, RoXY was one of the first clubs to bring house music from the US to Amsterdam, introducing a completely new sound to the city.

But RoXY was anything but normal.

On Wednesday nights, something special happened. The infamous Hard Gay Nights brought the dancefloor to life. At a time when the AIDS crisis heavily impacted the scene, the focus shifted back to movement, energy and living in the moment.

And it worked. These nights turned into an explosion of freedom, extravagance and expression.

Fun fact: in the early days, people didn’t want to hear house music. Some even walked off the dancefloor. The club reportedly gave the genre a deadline to prove itself. A few months later, there were queues stretching down the street.

Inside, everything happened at once.
Drag performances, art installations, unexpected acts and appearances from cultural icons like Jean Paul Gaultier and Grace Jones.

RoXY wasn’t a place you went just to dance.
It was a place where you could become someone else.

On June 21, 1999, during a final gathering after the funeral of founder Peter Giele, a fire broke out caused by fireworks. The club burned down completely.

In one night, an icon disappeared.

But that doesnt take away the fact that this club meant a lot for the electronic dance scene in Amsterdam and the rest of the Netherlands. by @arqive.zip

Back_in_time | 'Sunwaves Festival'

What started as a small beachfront gathering in Mamaia, Romania, grew into one of the most defining underground electronic music festivals in the world.

Founded in 2007, Sunwaves became the epicentre of the Romanian minimal movement. While the rest of the scene leaned into shorter sets and fast consumption, Sunwaves went in the opposite direction.

Here, time fades.

The festival is known for its marathon sets. Not two hours. Not four. But 10, 12, sometimes even 24 hours and beyond, with Marco Carola’s 24+ hour set as one of the standout moments. DJs play through entire days and nights without interruption, building journeys for everyone present.

Sunrise turns into daytime. Daytime into night. And the music keeps flowing.

But Sunwaves is more than just the music. It is the atmosphere.

Set directly on the Black Sea coast, the festival blends carefully selected records with a surreal sense of calm. The sound of waves in the background and the soft light during sunrise sessions make it feel almost like a dream.

The stages became part of its identity too. Large tent structures, often minimal in design but massive in impact, both online and offline. And not to forget the quality of the sound systems.

Artists like Rhadoo, Petre Inspirescu and Raresh turned these extended sets into an art form. Layer by layer, hour by hour, shaping the hypnotic Romanian sound that influenced dancefloors worldwide.

What makes Sunwaves different is its patience. There is no pressure to perform and no need to peak early. The crowd understands the journey, dancing for hours, sometimes days.

It is not about moments. It is about flow.

From a local Romanian secret to a global pilgrimage, Sunwaves attracts dancers from all over the world, all searching for that same feeling.

Back_in_time | ‘Paradise Garage’

“From 1977 to 1987, Paradise Garage became one of the most influential spaces in dance music. Hidden inside a former parking garage in New York, the club was built around music rather than status. It developed into a place where Black, Latino and LGBTQ+ communities could come together, with a strong emphasis on freedom and expression. Despite its underground nature, the club also attracted creatives and cultural figures, with names like Keith Haring regularly present on the dancefloor.
At the center of it was resident DJ Larry Levan. His way of playing stood apart from most DJs at the time. Instead of short, functional sets, he played for long stretches, carefully shaping the flow of the night.
The music played at Paradise Garage became known as “garage”. It was rooted in disco, but more stripped back and emotionally driven, with clear influences from soul, gospel and funk. Vocals played a central role, often carrying the weight of the track rather than serving as decoration.
A key factor in the club’s identity was its sound system. Custom-built and highly refined, it allowed for a level of clarity and physical impact that was rare at the time. Levan used this to his advantage, actively manipulating EQ and dynamics to shape how the music was experienced on the floor.
When the club closed in 1987, its influence had already moved beyond New York. Its musical direction and approach to DJing spread to the UK, where it contributed to the foundation of what would later develop into UK Garage.” by @arqive.zip
