‘Earth Body V’
a lesson in Impermanence

Bengoh Range Jungle, Borneo, 2024

The Bidayuh people believe that certain places in the wilderness are sacred gateways where the spirit world and human world overlap. The red river is considered especially powerful and is said to be home to Penunggu Sungai, the guardian spirit of the river who can see into the hearts of mortals. It is believed that if you sleep on the riverbed at night, she will visit you and bring you what you are looking for.

There is no trace of Earth Body V left now, only a memory in the story I am telling and the images captured. She has dissolved into thousands of particles - carried, scattered and redistributed by the forces of the river in the flash floods that came down from the mountains.

This work has been one of my greatest challenges so far. The relentless weather conditions here in the jungle have tested me both physically and emotionally, forcing me to confront my own doubts and inner dialogue.

Embracing impermanence is a process that I am still battling with - going against my usual method of working and thinking - challenging me to embrace a state of vulnerability and the unknown regarding my own time here.

We are so happy to show our new piece, ‘Mayfly’ at Village Meeting, a group show of collectible design objects by London-based artists, opening on Wednesday 16th September, 6pm at Hackney Downs Studios.   Made of London clay, chestnut wood, and canvas, the screen divider embraces the fluidity of nature, inviting space for activities where time simplifies: reading, writing, sculpting, painting…

Arran Gregory is a British-Sri Lankan artist based in the UK. His work spans sculpture, performance and film, and explores our relationship with the natural world. We visited him to discuss his first solo show, balancing creating in nature and exhibiting in the city, and the importance of taking time to slow down.

‘Teardrop’, 2026

The rhythms we have always been able to count on are changing. As the climate crisis makes itself felt more every day, it’s important to remember we are not separate from this.

We found this ground on a walk from our campsite to the beach. The estuary clay had dried enough to stand on, cracked into plates, ringed by the last of the water. Salmon and sea trout sitting in this estuary waiting for a mountain downpour.

England and Wales recorded their driest July in almost 190 years. Across the border, 71.3% of England is now in drought. Around the world drylands cover 41% of the world’s land area, home to 2.3 billion people.

We dug the wet clay from its edge and made this piece when the tide was low. When we came back the tide had risen, leaving the sculpture standing on the only dry patch of land.

We hope the rain in the hills will soon gradually replenish the river channels and dissolve the piece back into the estuary. taken in Mawddach Estuary by @arrangregory

I led my first collective sculpture workshop at OmVed last month. Thanks to all who joined, it was a great joy.

We learned how to cast using a rammed earth technique (a mix of clay, earth, sand & gravel) with teams mixing in coloured pigments to create layered soil horizons.

The piece sits under the shade of a walnut tree, open to the elements where we are all excited to see how this one will evolve as the seasons shift.

Thank you to everyone who came together, it truly was a team effort. Thanks @rescuedclayproject volunteers who helped prep the clay for this piece (clay rescued from the HS2 train line dig)

I created this mould before learning the Freeform techniques that I’ve since used to create my later Earth body works. It’s always an experiment working with natural materials which is what’s most intriguing about it.

A huge thank you to all who visited the Open Day of my show The Land Is A Giant Eardrum at OmVed Gardens yesterday.
The turnout was overwhelming and I feel so grateful to be showing these works in such an appropriate setting in London after returning from all the travels I have been on over the past years creating this work.

The show continues Weds and Thurs, 11-5pm
- I will be there both days, come and say hi.

Wednesday evenings meditation sound bath event has now sold out but there are still tickets available for my rammed earth sculpture workshop on July 26.
