Figure 1 shows a physiologic third heart sound in a healthy man aged 21 .From top, the traces record lead II and the sound record (SR) S1 resolves into its auricular and ventric%ular parts (a v), followed by S2, then S3 in early diastole Evans measured S3 at an average of 0.19 s after the onset of S2 in his series (Evans, 1943)

Figure 2 shows a fourth heart sound in a man aged 62 with heart failure from aortic incompe.tence. From top, the traces record lead II and the sound record (SR), marked 4 1 2 S4 falls in late diastole just before S1, as the atria contract into a failing left ventricle, and Evans held that both are needed, a failing ventricle and a normally contracting au%ricle. As this patient's heart enlarged and failed, his dual rhythm gave way to triple rhythm (Evans, 1943)

Figure 4 shows an atrial sound returning after cardioversion.from top, the traces record the apical phonocardiogram (PCG), the apex cardiogram (ACG), and the ECG the atrial sound (AS) sits before S1 and lines up with the presystolic a wave on the apex cardio%gram, starting before the ^QRS. The tracing comes from a 52yo M with arteriosclerotic heart disease three days after DC reversion of atrial fi.brillation on the day of reversion the a wave was there with no atrial sound ,All 16 patients in the series develop%ed one, on average by day 3 (O'Rourke, 1970)

Figure 1 shows physiolo%gic splitting in a normal subject. .From top, the traces record the pulmonary area, the mitral area, the carotid pulse, respiration, and lead II on inspiration S2 at the pulmonary area splits into A2 and P2 about 0.05 s apart, and on expiration the two components merge back into a single sound A2 lines up with the dicrotic notch of the carotid pulse, and P2 is identified by its confinement to the pulmonary area (Leatham & Gray, 1956)

Figure 2 shows wide splitting in a patient with comp.lete right bundle branch bl%%ock and an atrial septal defect. From top, the traces record the pulmonary area, the mitral area, the carotid pulse, and lead II, where the QRS is widened by the block right ventricular activation runs late, so both heart sounds split: S1 appears as two components (1 1) and S2 as A2 followed well after by P2 (2 2), with a systolic murmur (SM) between them (Leatham & Gray, 1956)

Figure 4 shows paradoxical splitting.from top, the traces record respiration, the carotid pulse, the pulmonary area, and the mitral area on expiration S2 splits by 0.04 s with the order reversed, P2 first and ^A2 second, and on inspiration it becomes ,single inspiration lengthens right ventricular systole and moves P2 later onto A2, while left ventri%cular systole stays the same length T@he tracing comes from a 33-year-old woman with a patent ductus arteriosus (Gray, 1956)

Figure 1 shows a normal phonocardiogram against a normal ECG S1, the closure of the mitral and tricuspid valves, falls at the QRS complex and marks the start of systole, just ahead of the carotid pulse ,,S2, the closure of the aortic and pulmonic valves, falls near the end of the T wave and marks the start of diastole, which lasts until the next QRS (Farahi et al., 2021) taken in Brigham and Womens Shapiro Cardiovascular Center by @arrhythmc
