What is A.R.R.O.W ? 📚

A.R.R.O.W., an acronym for (Aural, Read, Respond, Oral, Write) is a program developed by Dr Colin Lane in the UK based on learning through self voice techniques, whilst undertaking various programs covering reading, spelling, dictation, speech and listening skills, which produce significant results in children and adults who have learning difficulties across the spectrum as well as those who do not. Dr Lane’s research has spanned almost 30 years when he first developed the multi-sensory approach.

Dr. Colin Lane's higher degree covered research with children in special schools for those with learning difficulties and his PhD was based on research into the self-voice under the auspices of Exeter and Birmingham Universities. As a method of improving both reading and spelling this method has been used in Literacy Summer Schools, mainstream and special schools for a range of abilities across the UK.

Since 2004, A.R.R.O.W has been available in Trinidad and Tobago with its office based in Port-of-Spain.
The programme has helped thousands of students in over 200 schools across the country, with private tuition also being available.

On 2nd October, the A.R.R.O.W. Foundation brought the joy of reading and learning to life at our 2026 Literacy Day Extravaganza, in partnership with Parenco Trinidad and Tobago 🎉📚

Bringing together 132 students and 23 teachers from eight participating schools, the day was filled with creativity, discovery and a shared love of learning!

From interactive literacy games to our Storytelling Corner, there were so many opportunities for the students to explore the world of stories.

One of the highlights was Book Land, where every student had the opportunity to choose and receive a free book of their choice to take home! 📖💛 by @arrow.learn

A.R.R.O.W.'s partnership with Scotiabank Trinidad and Tobago Foundation takes literacy intervention way beyond reading and writing skills.

We recognise the potential literacy has to shape a child's confidence, independence and opportunities throughout life. Yet, for children who struggle to learn through conventional teaching methods, finding the right support can make all the difference.

Through this partnership, we are working to address these challenges through a combination of targeted literacy interventions, teacher training, and holistic support for students' wider learning communities. At the heart of this work is a recognition of each learner's individual needs and equipping the people around them with the tools to help them thrive.

Building literacy support from within 📚

A central part of A.R.R.O.W.’s partnership with the Scotiabank Trinidad and Tobago Foundation is training teachers to become A.R.R.O.W. tutors, helping schools build the skills and resources to continue supporting students over time.

The programme begins with the A.R.R.O.W. team working directly with approximately 25 children in each school. This first phase allows teachers to observe the approach in practice before moving into Phase Two: a two-day training workshop led by A.R.R.O.W. Director Christopher Bonterre.

Teachers then put their learning into practice with students, using the programme’s multi-sensory software, while documenting their progress, the students' learning trajectory, and their own findings. Their reports are reviewed by A.R.R.O.W. Tuition in the UK as part of the process towards official tutor certification.

Teachers at Tranquillity and Agostini Primary Schools have completed this process, with teachers at Agostini now officially certified!

By investing in teachers as well as students, we’re working towards a model where literacy support can become an ongoing part of school life.

Thank you to the Scotiabank Trinidad and Tobago Foundation for supporting this work.

“I have seen dramatic improvements in my students day to day life.”

Miss Annakay Wright from Tivoli Gardens High School in Jamaica shares her testimony of working with her students, on the ARROW programme!

95% improved their reading. 94% improved their spelling. And the progress continues. 🇯🇲📚

Through our collaboration with Literacy Education Acceleration Programme (LEAP), delivered with Jamaica’s Ministry of Education and the British High Commission in Jamaica, A.R.R.O.W. has been supporting students across secondary schools in Kingston and western Jamaica to strengthen their literacy skills and build confidence in their learning.

The results from our 2025–2026 programme speak for themselves:

📖 95% of reassessed students improved their reading age.

✍🏽 94% improved their spelling age.

📈 8.5 months was the average improvement in reading age.

📝 7 months was the average improvement in spelling age.

💛 82% showed improvements in self-esteem.

These results were recorded among 261 students who completed the programme and received both pre- and post-intervention reading and spelling assessments.

Through targeted, multisensory literacy support and ARROW's central Self-Voice technique, students are given the opportunity to strengthen foundational literacy skills, recognise their progress, grow in confidence and so much more.

Next week, we begin a new round of work with the 13 schools in Jamaica we have been working with since 2023 – building on the progress made so far and supporting another cohort of students on their educational journeys.

We look forward to sharing the progress, learnings and insights with you as this new chapter begins!

"Reading with the students reinforced for me that a shared story can do much more than build knowledge - it can spark curiosity, strengthen confidence and encourage children to express their ideas..."

Through our Read Aloud Programme, in partnership with the Scotiabank Foundation, we're bringing the joy of reading to primary school students across Trinidad and Tobago.

Recent sessions at Esperanza Presbyterian Primary and Aranguez Government Primary brought students, A.R.R.O.W. tutors and Scotiabank team members together through storytelling, shared reading and conversation. Moments like this are just as important as typical classroom activities – they encourage children to listen, think critically, ask questions and confidently express their own ideas.

At ARROW, we believe in a holistic approach to literacy development in children, to support them in developing the skills, confidence and independence to become active participants in their own learning.

A heartfelt thank you to the Scotiabank Foundation for their continued partnership and commitment to creating meaningful learning opportunities for young people.

Our aim with the Read Aloud Programme, which unfolds throughout Trinidad primary schools throughout the year, is to encourage more and more children to discover the joy of reading and the power of their own voices.

The results are IN! 📖

A recently published independent report in the Caribbean Educational Research Journal details A.R.R.O.W.’s work in primary schools across East Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, highlighting the significant impact it has on improving students’ literacy skills.

In schools across Laventille and Morvant, Trinidad, 183 students took part in an evaluation of A.R.R.O.W. during the 2021–2022 school year.

After approximately 8–10 hours of intervention, students showed average improvements equivalent to:
📖 9 months of reading progress
✏️ 6 months of spelling progress

Additionally in Jamaica, the Literacy Education Acceleration Programme (LEAP) pilot in 2023 also provided a strong test of A.R.R.O.W., where students using the programme were seen twice as likely to improve their reading level as students in a control group.

These findings offer important evidence for the potential of multisensory, student-centred approaches, including A.R.R.O.W.’s Self-Voice Technique, to support learners experiencing literacy challenges.

📚 This Literacy Day, let’s remember that every learner deserves the opportunity to thrive.

Literacy is more than reading and writing; it is a gateway to confidence, independence, opportunity and participation in the world around us.

Today is an important reminder of the responsibility we share within our communities to nurture and support learners of all abilities, to have access to the resources and learning opportunities that they deserve!

At A.R.R.O.W., we believe that every learner has the potential to shine when given the right support.

Let’s continue working together to shape a future where literacy is accessible, learning is inclusive, and no learner is left behind.

Happy Literacy Day from A.R.R.O.W. 💙
