We know there’s been a lot of concern recently around New Zealand Post reviewing and closing some post offices around the country. We’re really pleased to let our community know that Arrowtown Post Office is staying open and will continue to be here for all your postal needs for the foreseeable future.

Did you know the old wooden telephone in the Arrowtown Post Office still rings when you call our number? And it’s not just any phone…

Meet our Model AB530-590 Ericsson Telephone, made in Stockholm. Known as the Scroll Top Ericsson here in NZ, this beauty has been connecting people since the late 1890s, with this particular one probably made just after World War I. Crafted from oak and built to last, it once served as a lifeline for the whole district.

Back in the day, making a call wasn’t as easy as tapping a screen:
👉 You’d crank the handle
👉 A light would flash at the exchange
👉 A real human operator would answer (who probably knew you by name!) and connect you
👉 And because it was a party line, you had to wait your turn and mind your manners 👀

This very phone was used right here in the Post Office - and over 100 years later, it’s still doing its thing.

Did you know that Arrowtown’s historic Post Office is the second oldest in New Zealand still operating on its original site?

Postal services began in Arrowtown as early as 1863, just a year after gold was discovered here, with mail delivered from makeshift locations as the town grew around the Arrow River. The first image of the original Post Office was taken in April 1894.

The current post office building you see on Buckingham Street was built in 1915, after the earlier postmaster’s house and post office were destroyed by fire.

What makes this place truly special isn’t just its age, it’s the community spirit that’s kept it alive.

In 1991, when postal services were under threat, the Lakes District Museum stepped in to run the post office, and by 1995 had purchased the building with strong support from locals, ensuring Arrowtown didn’t lose this essential service.

Today, the Post Office continues to serve residents and visitors alike, not just as a place to send letters and parcels, but also a beautiful gift shop. Pop in next time you’re in town and take a moment to appreciate one of Arrowtown’s treasured heritage buildings!

A little heads-up for anyone sending domestic parcels for Christmas - we’re open over the weekend at the Arrowtown Post Office from 11am to 3pm!

If you can pop in on Saturday or Sunday to get your parcels away, it’ll help spread the love and ease the stress of Christmas week.

📢 SCAM ALERT – PLEASE READ

We’re aware that some customers are receiving fraudulent text messages claiming to be from NZ Post. These messages state that a parcel delivery has been suspended due to missing address details and include a link to “update your information.”

❗ Please be aware:
The link takes you to a fake website asking for credit card details to pay a small “delivery fee.” This is a scam, and entering any details could put your financial information at risk.

These texts will usually come from an overseas phone code such as +63.

✔️ What to do:
• Do NOT click on any links in suspicious messages.
• Delete the text immediately.
• If in doubt, please do come in and check with us.

With the longer evening hours it’s the perfect time to settle in with a good book – and Arrowtown Post Office is the place to grab a bargain! 📖 We’ve got a range of great secondhand novels for $5, cookbooks for $2, and children’s books for $2 – perfect for the whole family.

If you need something for the rest of school holidays, we also have some great puzzles for $5 and some fun new kid’s activity books!

We also take donations of novels if you want to get rid of some to make space on your bookshelf. 😉

📮 Arrowtown’s Post Office – since 1915

One of Arrowtown’s most beloved gems, our Post Office is the second-oldest in NZ still operating on its original site.

💡 Postal services started here in 1863 during the gold rush.
🔥 The original building was lost to fire, and the current Post & Telegraph Office opened in 1915.
