Four pairs of shoes. Four future legends. One teenage photographer. In February 1964, a young Lynn Goldsmith encountered The Beatles in Miami Beach. Among the photographs she made was this remarkable image—not of their faces, but of their shoes. It's an early glimpse of the distinctive perspective that would eventually help define her extraordinary career photographing some of the world's most influential musicians and cultural figures. All these years later, Goldsmith's photographs continue to demonstrate that there's often more to a portrait than meets the eye. Discover her remarkable journey in ARS GLORIA's latest feature, 'Lynn Goldsmith: Beyond the Frame.' Illustration is one of those art forms we encounter constantly, yet rarely give the same attention we give painting, sculpture, or photography. At its best, illustration doesn’t simply decorate an idea — it builds a world. These production paintings by Wayne White were created for "Borgel," an unrealized screen project based on Daniel Pinkwater’s novel. Strange highways, impossible roadside attractions, retro-futurist cars, and mountains of luggage already feel inhabited before a camera ever arrives. That’s part of what makes this work so fascinating. A set designer or illustrator can spend days, weeks, or months imagining places that may never ultimately exist beyond the artwork itself. But the image still survives — and deserves to be considered as art in its own right. For our Week Nine ARS GLORIA profile, 'Such Harmonious Madness,' we celebrate Wayne White not only for the worlds audiences know, but for the extraordinary ones that almost existed. #WayneWhite #ArsGloria #Borgel #IllustrationArt by @arsgloriatn
Wayne White doesn’t stop at the canvas. His creative world has always moved freely between painting, puppetry, television, performance, and music. That musical work is collaborative, created with @shakingray, @jimtate, and @brybrycycle — another extension of the restless, multidisciplinary imagination behind his art. Earlier this year, USERNAME PASSWORD performed in conjunction with Wayne’s Revenge of the Knoxville Girl exhibition at the Knoxville Museum of Art during Big Ears. đŸŽ¶ Read “'Such Harmonious Madness': The Art of Wayne White” at the link in bio. #WayneWhite #UsernamePassword #ArsGloria #BigEars #TennesseeArt by @arsgloriatn
Before many people knew Wayne White as a painter, they already knew his imagination. đŸŽ„ 🔹 🎹 Across television, music videos, puppetry, and production design, Wayne helped build some of the strangest and most memorable visual worlds of the last several decades. From Shining Time Station and Riders in the Sky to The Weird Al Show, Peter Gabriel’s “Big Time,” and The Smashing Pumpkins’ “Tonight, Tonight,” his work has always carried the same restless mix of humor, theatricality, craftsmanship, and visual chaos. These sets and design concepts offer another look at just how broad that creative life has been. A sketch can become a puppet. A puppet can become a sculpture. A sculpture can become a performance. đŸŽ„ 🎭 For Wayne White, the boundaries between drawing, painting, puppetry, sculpture, installation, and theater have never mattered much. Ideas move. They begin on paper, take shape in the studio, grow to monumental proportions, and sometimes wind up being worn, manipulated, performed, or inhabited. That restless movement between disciplines is part of what has made White’s career so difficult to categorize — and so unmistakably his own. This week, ARS GLORIA explores that career in “Such Harmonious Madness: The Art of Wayne White.” Read the full feature through the link in our bio. đŸŽ” George Jones — “The Race Is On” #ARSGLORIA #WayneWhite #ContemporaryArt #Puppetry #Sculpture by @arsgloriatn
“That’s the job of the artist. You have to find some kind of angle that’s unique to you. Going through different disciplines gives you that new perspective.” For decades, Wayne White has done exactly that. The Tennessee-born artist has moved between illustration, production design, puppetry, painting, music, television, performance, and large-scale installation—developing a creative vocabulary that is unmistakably his own. From his Emmy-winning work on Pee-wee’s Playhouse to the word paintings that became one of his signatures, Wayne has built a career around experimentation, humor, spectacle, and the willingness to keep moving into unfamiliar territory. This week, ARS GLORIA celebrates Wayne White. Read “'Such Harmonious Madness': The Art of Wayne White” through the link in our bio. From a block of foam to a creature with personality. 🩭🩃🩌 Sherri Warner Hunter’s public art doesn’t simply decorate a space—it becomes part of the world around it. Behind every mosaic-covered animal is a much less glamorous beginning: carving, shaping, fabrication, and the painstaking process of turning raw materials into something built to survive outdoors, invite interaction, and spark a little wonder. Swipe to see some of that transformation—and a few of the colorful residents that emerged from it. ⏳ Sherri Warner Hunter made a five-year bet on herself. After moving to Tennessee, she gave herself five years to establish an independent career as an artist. If it didn’t work, she would find a job and make art on the side. Then came year four, month eleven. With just one month left, Hunter received her first public-art commission through the Tennessee Arts Commission. “Almost,” she says. “But the Universe was watching out for me.” Decades later, Hunter has built a career creating public art across Tennessee and beyond—proof of just how much can hinge on staying with something a little longer. đŸ§± Concrete isn’t exactly known for being delicate. That’s part of what makes Sherri Warner Hunter’s work so fascinating. Across sculpture, mosaic, and public art, she turns one of the world’s most utilitarian materials into something playful, expressive, and deeply human. Dragons, creatures, benches, monuments, and gathering places become proof that permanence doesn’t have to mean severity. For Hunter, the challenge isn’t simply making something beautiful. It’s making something beautiful that can live in the world.
