How it started. Swipe to see how it’s going. Spoiler alert - it’s still going. And going and going.

I actually didn’t think I would go beyond a quick color study with this. Then I got into hyper focus mode and lost a few hours and all of a sudden his face started looking Bad Bunny adjacent. Now I’m in it. Still not there yet.

Tomorrow I need to make his nose longer to finish this and then go back to my big painting. Somebody hold me to it please! taken in Eastown by @art.kylehepp

As I was uploading this, I realized I numbered it 30 and it’s actually 39! We’re getting somewhere 💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼

This Benito is maybe the most representative of why I started this series of Bad Bunny. In the reference photo he’s actually wearing a sheer t shirt with the bra, panties and tie printed onto it. I think he doesn’t wear skirts to dress like a woman. He wears skirts to enjoy fashion, period. To me, the way he embraces femininity not for femininity’s sake, but as a different way to be masculine, is a way for men to break out of this cage that they’ve built for their own selves. taken in Eastown by @art.kylehepp

What the people want, the people get. (Black and white. The people wanted black and white).

Process - I painted the back ground. Then I painted it again. Still wasn’t convinced. Decided I’d do a grey scale painting.

Once I added black and white to the canvas, voila 🪄 All of a sudden the layers of the background showed through the black and white in a way I love. I did add a little more neon pink to the face, because duh.

I might keep going and do a few more of these checkered Bad Bunnies, they’re really calling to me right now. I think it’s the simplicity of them, compared to the dining room wall sized painting that I’m working on simultaneously. I’ve been so overwhelmed by that one that it was nice to take a break and work on something smaller and simple in a way that allowed me to be more free with it.

But, #35/100, done ✅ ✅ ✅ I’ll take that win! taken in Eastown by @art.kylehepp

Back on my bullshit. (Pastels)

I started looking through my materials to see what else I could make while I wait for some canvases to dry, and I came across two little acrylic/pastel ground backgrounds that I had made for the Nude Neon Ladies project. Thought I’d do a Bad Bunny in that style and it was SO FUN.

Part of why it was fun is because it was easy and familiar. I had forgotten what it feels like to not have to concentrate like my life depends on it in order to make something decent 😵‍💫

And part of why it was fun, is because soft pastels really are *that* girl 🔥🔥🔥 The texture and the blending 🥵🥵🥵 I’ve missed theeeeem. taken in Eastown by @art.kylehepp

Stories I tell myself - I can’t draw, this will never look like Bad Bunny. If I want to be successful, the only way to do it is to look pretty and create content (💩) on Instagram. Everybody will come to my show and think my paintings are amateur hour specials. Nobody will come to my show. I don’t know how to do large scale paintings, those are for real artists. I am not a real artist. I should not be prioritizing my art when we have so much going on. I don’t have time to be creative. I don’t deserve for my work to be seen. And so on. And so on. And so on.

Yet, here we are 😂 #31. Somehow managed to make another accurately abstract Bad Bunny in spite of it all. The voices in my head can fuck right off! taken in Eastown by @art.kylehepp

I’ve spent years making art in this house and making this house into art. We just moved and put her on the market, and to say I’m emotional is an understatement 🥹

First Bad Bunny in the new house 🏠

I struggled with the background on this one. I loved the checkered Bad Bunny I did a while back, where his jacket turned into part of the background, so I thought I could do that with this one again.

Alas, it was too busy and too flat. Magic cannot be reconstructed. Then I tried to fully cover up the lines I had done with thick paint and keep the background simple like most of the rest of my Benitos, and it looked dull. I scraped some of the wet paint off and painted on a few more colors but tried letting some of the original attempt at lines coming off his jacket show throw. Voila! I found it! I found the magic. Now I love how the lines barely showing through, echo his jacket in a subtle way.

I was writing about this in my journal this morning - I can’t make magic on command. Sometimes it feels like it’s totally and completely out of my control. But then there are times like today, when I could feel it was within reach and just couldn’t quite get there. I kept going and finally, boom! There it was, the minute I thought this one would be a throw away, it came together! 💥 💥 💥 taken in Eastown by @art.kylehepp

I made so many Bad Bunnies while we were in Chile and I thought they were all uninspired. You’d think traveling would have my creativity through the roof. But, sometimes I am just off my schedule and my sleeping and eating are out of wack and I miss my dining room table painting spot.

I started this Benito the first day we arrived to Santiago. I kept working on him off and on during the whole trip and felt like I was getting nowhere fast. Got back to GR on Sunday and came back to him and all of a sudden 💥 There he is! Guess I just needed to come home to my easel and my pastels to make something happen 🥰 taken in Santiago, Chile by @art.kylehepp

This page is all neon but here is a little secret, I am also obsessed with black and white. I am not the first person to say this, but I truly believe that if you throw black and white checkers or black and white stripes into a design, you can do whatever else you want in terms of color and pattern and it’ll look good. I have tested this theory in my maximalist house and it holds up. I thought I’d test it with my Bad Bunny collection, and yep. Point proved. Just adding this one to the lineup makes the rest of them somehow look more anchored and cohesive together. HOW AM I EVER GOING TO SPLIT THESE UP?!
