Stepping out of the infinite and back onto the dusty playa... 🌀✨
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of exiting “Unfolding Humanity” @unfolding_humanity . It genuinely feels like stepping out of a geometric spacecraft or a portal to another dimension.
This video captures that surreal, liminal moment of leaving the infinite, mirrored depths of this masterpiece and returning to the reality of #BlackRockCity at #BurningMan2023
📐 The Minds Behind the Magic: @art_builds
This mind-bending installation wasn’t just built; it was mathematically engineered into existence by the incredible ArtBuilds collective. Born out of a collaboration between faculty, students, and community volunteers at the University of San Diego, this team bridges the gap between complex STEM concepts and jaw-dropping participatory art.
🛠️ The Breakdown of a Masterpiece
What looks like pure desert magic from the outside is actually a triumph of collaborative engineering and heavy lifting:
🕋 The Structure: A massive, two-ton steel dodecahedron.
💡 The Glow: Adorned with over 17,000 individually programmed LEDs that illuminate the playa and challenge the night sky.
🛝 The Interaction: The giant pentagonal walls unfold entirely under human power. You don’t just look at this art, you physically manipulate it to step inside.
💠 The Interior: Once the walls close behind you, you’re enveloped in a matrix of infinite reflections, prompting you to contemplate the tension and harmony between technology and humanity.
🧠 A 500-Year-Old Mystery
The design is a brilliant nod to a centuries-old math puzzle. It references Albrecht Dürer’s unsolved 500-year-old conjecture on unfolding polyhedra, while simultaneously gesturing toward a possible shape of our universe. Leave it to a crew of brilliant creators to turn high-level geometry into the most profound interactive sanctuary on the playa!
