Hello 👋 I want to welcome you to my new IG account, Art Creates Hope!

I’ve created this account to share my passion for creative pursuits combined with my dedication to making a positive difference in the world.

Throughout my life I’ve been committed to various philanthropic causes - animal welfare, cancer research, and mental health being the ones that hit closest to home.

In 2019 I was introduced to mandala art as a practice to help process the grief of my mom’s terminal brain cancer diagnosis.

Since my mom’s passing, I’ve been inspired to use the art I create to further fund the causes that are important to me.

For every piece sold I will be paying forward a minimum 10% of the total sale to charity. Once a piece is sold I will share how much was donated and which charity received the donation.

As I balance this with my full-time career in the veterinary field, pieces will only be available occasionally as I find the time and inspiration to complete them.

Thank you for joining me in this creative endeavor and helping to spread hope through art ❤️

~ Lisa D

Had to give it a reel too ☺️

Music is life 🎶 ❤️ I couldn’t imagine life without music and concerts.

I have seen hundreds of concerts over my lifetime and 52 of them have been Dave Matthews Band, my favourite of all time 💕

Since 2012 my husband and I have been going to @gorgeamphitheatre to see @davematthewsband every Labour Day weekend. It’s one of my happiest places on earth and I look forward to seeing them there every year and I’m always a little sad when it’s over.

For a long time I’ve had an idea to create some music themed mandalas and to help with my post Gorge Davepression I decided I would finally make it happen!

The centre of this mandala is a vinyl sticker with lyrics from the DMB song Two Step. Since the sticker was yellow and had a little bee on it I decided to lean into that for the palette and design elements 🐝 🌺

I have some other DMB songs I want to bring to life in mandala form, but for now hope you enjoy “Two Step”

🎶 Celebrate we will, cause life is short but sweet for certain 🎶

Wood: 18” birch @natecoofficial
Vinyl Sticker: @dmbgc
Paint: @decoart and Nuvo Drop
Sealed with @krylonbrand
Rhinestone embellishments
Sawtooth hook for hanging

When @dotswithbre and @mandaladoc announced they were collaborating on a celestial mandala course I was so excited and knew I had to take it.

I finished this one not long ago and posted it in stories but it deserves a spot on my timeline. I am in love with this moon and what it means to me 🥰

I want to give Bre and Ranoo a heartfelt thank you for creating this course. I have made many pieces that I have been very proud of and found joy in, but this piece was extra special because it gave me a visceral reaction.

I cried when I finished this piece. Like full on 😭 but also 🥹

I was drawn to this celestial course because of my mom. She definitely had a sun and moon home decor phase…there were even wine glasses! 😆

Being able to create a piece of art for my home that reminds me of my mom is special.

When I finished this moon I thought about how much I wish I could have shown her. I know she would have loved it 🥹

Two and a half years after I created this piece it found the person it was meant to connect with and I couldn’t be happier 🥰

This was a great example of waiting for the right person to connect with your art and enjoying the piece yourself until that day comes.

I created this mandala using DecoArt paints with names that related to the ocean/beach and for that reason it always had a special place in my heart 🌊 ♥️

Given my intention and attachment to it I was happy to keep this one on my wall as long as it was meant to be with me, but when it sold this week I was so honoured and excited.

I look forward to hand delivering this mandala to its new home soon.

Thanks to the sale of this mandala I was able to donate $25 to The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada as well as $25 to The Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada

The inspiration piece I created for my mandala workshop.

I know when I first started mandalas I used more of the dot art concepts than brush strokes and given we were limited on time I didn’t want the piece to include top dots or anything that required us to wait for paint to dry before we could proceed.

I ended up using a simple 3 colour palette with a few different complimentary Nuvo drops that the students could choose from.

Boy was I relieved when I finally landed on a palette and design because for a bit there I was going down a rabbit hole and was driving myself a bit mad 🤪

In the end I was really happy with the simple approach that I landed on. by @art_creates_hope

At the beginning of the year I was asked if I would host a mandala workshop for fellow vet techs at our welcome event to kick off our annual continuing education conference.

While I was honoured to be asked I was also apprehensive to say yes. Was I good enough to teach others? Would anyone even want to paint with me? Would I have the capacity on top of working full time and other things going on in my life to pull it together? Did I even have the tools to host a workshop? 🤪

There were so many reasons I could have said no, but I’m so glad I said YES!

None of my fears came true and I felt such a swell of pride and gratitude that these 5 lovely humans wanted to join me to paint a little wood paw print mandala magnet.

While we painted we shared stories and laughs and in addition to creating mandalas we created a memory that I will cherish.

We worked off an inspiration piece I had created and they all used the same palette but I loved seeing how each person’s mandala evolved into its own unique piece.

The following day when I presented each of them with their finished mandala it brought me such joy to see how pleased they each were as they saw the finished piece without guide marks and with varnish applied.

I am so happy I said yes to this opportunity, and I’m incredibly grateful to the amazing people who participated and made my first mandala painting workshop experience such a positive one! ☺️💜

Also thanks to @dotsoflovecanada for the swift delivery of dotting tools to ensure I was all good to go in time for the workshop. You’re the best! 🙏

It only took me a month to actually paint one of the many notebooks I purchased.

That’s pretty good by my standards 🙌 😂

For those who have painted notebooks before, what are your tips for sealing it? The rhinestones are just held on with some Faber-Castell kneadable art eraser, I haven’t glued them yet because I need to seal the cover with something. Tips welcome. TIA! ☺️

A Buffalo Bills keychain for my brother-in-law, Bill. Pretty impressed with my ability to use the Cricut for such a tiny logo. Look at those little leg pieces! I’m also really happy with the simple but cute mandala design on the one side.

Thank you to my sister for commissioning me to make this piece for Bill’s birthday. I’m so glad he loved it and that I was able to donate $25 to The Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada thanks to this commission.

Go sports! 🏈

I’m doing my first workshop this week! Depending on how it goes it may also be my last 🤪🤣

My professional association is having their annual continuing education conference this week and we’re kicking things off with a welcome event which will include a market and activities. I was asked if I would run a mandala painting workshop and I decided to say yes, even though my initial instinct was to turn down the offer. I figure this will be a good environment to give it a try.

Given the attendees will all be registered vet techs I decided we’d make paw print magnets together 🐾 💕

A couple weeks ago I landed on the design for the workshop. This weekend I got my wood rounds all prepped. I’ll work on paint palettes on Wednesday and then Thursday night will be go time!

Hopefully people want to come paint with me, but even if they don’t I’m proud of myself for saying yes and going outside my comfort zone.

If you’re coming to the BCVTA Spring Conference come paint with me!

Edit: this is not my real voice. I don’t actually sound like a Chipmunk 😂 my reel didn’t sound like this when I previewed it and I don’t have the patience to redo it so we can all just share a laugh at my expense 🤣

New art added to my collection thanks to the talents of @tabithaschae.art

Thanks @kim.dot.calm for introducing me to her work 🙏 ☺️

I’m in love with my new feline friend and his butterfly buddy 🐯 🦋

Such a beautiful piece Tabitha! 😍

Earlier today I posted a story and said this piece was an “interesting journey”. Here’s why.

I didn’t love how much contrast there was between the darkest colour and the rest of the palette.

I really didn’t like what I did with the corners. I ended up sanding it all down, but not as successfully as I would have liked so there’s parts where I can see the old design peaking through.

When I repainted the base colour on the corners it didn’t match up perfectly which is maybe because I used the paint full strength without any varnish added like I originally did 🤷‍♀️

All these little things added up and had me disappointed, but instead of trashing it I decided I’d just use it as a total experiment piece and slathered it with DecoArt Iridescent Violet varnish to see how it would come out 😆

It was a good reminder to try things and see how they go. You might love it, you might not, but at least you’ll learn something.

In this case, I liked it better than before and definitely learned some things.
