parenting is watching our children become who they are slowly, quietly, one small step at a time.

We drive them to practice.
We encourage them when it gets hard.
We remind them to keep going.
But we can’t do the work for them.
They have to show up. They have to struggle. They have to fail, try again, and discover for themselves that they are capable of more than they thought.
And most of the time, we don’t even realize how much they’re growing.

Until one day, they’re standing in front of you, being handed a brown belt.
And you realize
Oh.
Look how far you’ve come.
Maybe that’s one of the hardest and most beautiful parts of parenting: learning to trust the process we can’t always see.

One belt at a time. ❤️ by @art_of.parenting

Nobody tells you how much parenting changes when your children become teenagers.
One day, they don’t need you in quite the same way.
They close their bedroom door.
Their friends become important.
They start making more of their own decisions.
And sometimes you wonder where your little child went.
But then...
Something beautiful begins to unfold.
You realize you didn’t lose your child.
You were given the chance to meet them all over again.
You begin to discover who they are not just as your son or daughter, but as a person.
Their sense of humor.
Their convictions.
Their passions.
Their kindness.
The dreams they’re beginning to chase.
The relationship shifts.
It’s no longer built on dependence.
It’s built on trust.
On conversations that happen because they choose to share.
On inside jokes.
Car rides.
Late night talks.
Quiet moments that feel like gifts.
As parents, we spend years teaching our children how to stand on their own.
When they finally do...
it can feel bittersweet.
But maybe that’s the miracle.
We aren’t losing them.
We’re watching them become exactly who they were created to be.
And if we’re willing to let go of who they were yesterday...
we get the incredible privilege of knowing who they are today.
That’s one of the greatest gifts of parenting.

As parents, it’s easy to spend our energy chasing more.

More things.
More activities.
More distractions.

But children don’t need more stuff.
They need love, presence, and connection.

Peace isn’t found in what we own, but in what we value.

Sometimes less isn’t less…
it’s everything. ❤️

Doing something for love can carry expectation.
Doing something from love carries peace.
I think parenting teaches us that every day. 🤍 by @art_of.parenting

No one talks about this part
the letting go when they’re older.
They talk about babies,
first steps,
first days of school
how hard it is to release their hand
for a moment.
But no one talks about
this kind of letting go.
The kind that doesn’t come back
at the end of the day.
The kind where they turn
not away from you
but toward their life.
And it’s right,
it’s beautiful,
it’s exactly what you raised them for.
And still
it hurts in a place
no one prepared you for.
Because it’s not just them growing
it’s your place in their world
quietly shifting.
Conversations soften.
You’re not the first call.
Not the first knowing.
They reach for friends,
for love,
for something beyond you.
And you stand there thinking
do they still need me?
Do they still feel me
the way I feel them?
Of course they do.
But it’s different now.
And different can feel
like distance
if you don’t know how to hold it.
I have three
all at once
stretching outward
17, 19, almost 21
and one still holding the edge of childhood
with one foot out the door.
And I am trying
to grow,
to shift,
to become someone
who doesn’t orbit around them
every second of the day.
But I miss them.
I miss the version of us
that didn’t require
so much space.
I miss being the place
they came to
without thinking.
Now I remind them
I’m here.
Always.
Even when I know
I might not be the one
they come to first.
And that’s the quiet ache
loving them enough
to step back
while every part of you
wants to step closer.
People say,
this is how it’s supposed to be.
I know. I know.
But knowing
doesn’t make it easier
to sit in the silence
where they used to be.
Doesn’t make it easier
to trust
that the connection holds
even when it stretches thin.
I hope the string stays.
I hope they still reach for me
in the ways that matter.
I hope
they still like me.
And maybe this is it
the real work of motherhood
no one name,
Not raising them.
But releasing them.
And learning
how to stay
without holding on. by @art_of.parenting
