The weather was gorgeous today so F block took a trip to some galleries nearby! We saw Abigail Lucien at Nicola Vassell and Carlos Vega at Jack Shainman. Really cool, esp right after our mosaic projects. We are so lucky to be in a neighborhood full of amazing galleries!! by @art_with_avalon

Album covers from my intro students!! They demonstrated their knowledge of the principles of design by illustrating a song or album by an artist of their choice. They needed to think about color and typography to help convey the genre / mood of the music. Really amazing work!!! by @art_with_avalon

Art & Social Justice just wrapped up our first project! This semester, we’re focusing on the city we live in, starting with an illustrated map of our neighborhoods. We used the NYC Language Map as a starting point to find out what cultures are present where we live. Some we were already aware of, but we also found out some new things! (Did you know there’s a lot of Greek speakers near our school?)

Using both what we learned from our research and our own lived experiences, we created maps that celebrate what we see everyday. There were no real rules - these didn’t have to be geographically accurate, so maybe don’t use them if you’re lost - and everyone’s was completely different. When we finished, we laid them all out in a rough map of New York City and shared them with each other. Sooo impressed by these kids!!! by @art_with_avalon

Worlds colliding! Julia, Ana, Jazzy, and I met up with Tani and Sonia from my old school @uasch to celebrate their awards at the Met. So proud of every single one of them, each nominated for their extraordinary artistic skills. I have had the honor of teaching all but Ana, who was strongly recommended for this award by Gladys and will be attending SVA in the fall!! Also had a fun bonus visit from lovely supporters / UASCH friends Jeo and Britney. :)

Jazzy won the Haney Medal, awarded to 9th graders showing the most growth and potential in art.

Ana and Sonia won the St Gaudens Medal, awarded to graduating seniors who have completed an art program with excellence in drawing.

Julia and Tani won the Alexander Medal, awarded to graduating seniors who have completed an art program with distinction.

Congratulations to these amazing students!!! And shoutout to @msboyduasch for carrying the torch at UASCH. taken in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York by @art_with_avalon

A teeny tiny selection of the APAH final projects !! They had to create something (artwork, installation, research project) and write a manifesto about it. I didn’t get photos of everything but I was SO blown away by these projects!!! Amazing work!

Avalon had the AP Art History students meet them at the Union Square Barnes and Nobles to meet the one and only @ricksteveseurope Rick Steves! He was just as delightful in person and answered all of the students’ questions. He even signed one of their art pieces! Hi from @humanitiesprep! I was going to wait to post a semester round up but my AP Art History class was so much fun that I had to go ahead and share. To wrap up our Baroque unit, students created Vanitas, a genre of memento mori. Vanitas are still lifes focusing on the vanity of human existence. I was blown away by their creativity and problem solving!! Swipe to see some behind the scenes action 📸

To say that making art with y’all for the past three years has been a privilege would be an understatement. We’ve done SO much together from our yearly zines to having your art displayed at Barney’s for the Louis Vuitton 200th Anniversary Show. Alongside academics and artmaking, we’ve also just had so much fun. Y’all have made me laugh, cry, and everything in between. I am so grateful for every moment we spent together. I might have been your teacher, but I really learned so much from you every single day. I also wouldn’t have survived without our other inspiring teachers, who gave me guidance, support, and lifelong friendships. I’ll truly miss everyone at UASCH!

While I may be leaving UASCH, the impression y’all have left on me will stay with me my whole life. Please keep me updated on your art and adventures! by @art_with_avalon

The Class of 2024 has officially graduated! I am so proud of you. When I started teaching in 2021, I got a good chunk of y’all in my classes. From the very beginning, I knew y’all were special. You’ve done some amazing things since then, both with and without me, from showing your art at the Louis Vuitton 200th anniversary show to becoming certified EMTs and medical assistants. Y’all have left a huge impression on me, and I’m so lucky we had this time together. by @art_with_avalon

To the class of 2023: I am so so so proud of you, and I am lucky I got to hangout and make art with you the last two years. I have been so inspired by your innovative ideas and the challenges you set for yourself in and outside of our art classes. Even when I was waking you up from naps and getting bullied about my accent (y’all, it is NOT that bad), I enjoyed every moment with y’all. You have all grown into unique individuals over the past two years, and I cannot wait to see where you go next. I will miss you and am trying not to take your graduation personal, but you will all do amazing things!🥰
