It was a great experience, a bit of pressure all the same being a world championships. It was great to meet other athletes competing in my age category.

The buildup to the race in the warmup area can test peoples nerves, there’s a huge countdown clock, with foreboding emotional music. You feel like you’re about to go into a gladiator arena. You can tell everyone’s very tense.

So this is how the race went, I had a good start.

Ski ERG - I just keep it going at a steady pace. Felt fine. Was the first person to leave this station.

Unfortunately, I made a mistake and run an extra lap, which put about an extra one minute and 40 seconds on top of my time.

I’m told this does happen even to some of the Elite athletes, but it was my first time.

I’ll never make that mistake again.

So I had to fight my way through the field again.

Sledge push - pushed the first length almost entirely. But then did half lengths to avoid overdo heart rate.

Sledge pull - I didn’t chalk my hands, so with the sweet, on my hands made it a little more difficult to grip the rope.
On the full length sled pull the rope stretches, so you have to try to keep the tension on the rope.

1000m Row - The usual bottleneck is getting it fast enough and out of it.

200m Farmers carry - At world championships everything is the Pro weights category. I had taken an energy Gel just 5 minutes before and got some of it on my hands. Even with the chalk the kettle bells can feel very slippery. So a top tip is don’t take a Gel until after the farmers carry or don’t get it on your hands.

100m Walking Lunges - the judges are very strict here even if your knee does touch the grind they want to see it clearly. Got a warning, but no penalties.

Burpees Broad Jumps - This is a good one for me, but the white lines are slippery, so every time I landed on a white line my feet would skid forward, and could potentially cause you to fall over.
So I learnt learn not to land on the lines.

100 Wall Balls - This is the real maker brake station. I paced myself in 20 to 15 Rep sets, which work out well for me. Just went for burn out after 60 reps until the 100 were done.
