🎨🌾 APPALACHIA, THIS ONE IS FOR YOU! 🌻🖌️ Our NEW Appalachian Futures General Fund is now open + taking applications from eligible artists and collectives across the entire Central Appalachian region!

The Waymakers Collective is proud to announce our open call for $5,000 project grants for individual artists and organizations who are contributing to imagining Appalachian Futures — particularly with a focus on art and cultural practices that propose more just and inclusive alternatives. 🌱

📍🗺️ This opportunity is open to individual artists, cultural organizations, and cultural bearers in the Appalachian counties of Ohio, West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, and Western North Carolina.

So glad I got to see Basquiat: Figures, Signs, Symbols that features ten paintings from the Kenneth C. Griffin Collection, the largest presentation of the artist’s work to date in Florida.

A lot of Basquiat’s work sits in private collections, a lot of the paintings in this exhibition I have only seen on tshirts and other merchandise. Seeing these works in person was a powerful experience because of the scale and size of the paintings. I have always loved the rhythm in the mark making of Basquiat and how that rhythm, along with the coded cultural language makes him one of my favorite artists. Since 2020, the Waymakers Collective has awarded funds to 324 individual artists, organizations, and/ or cultural workers in the Central Appalachian region — totaling $1,919,000! 💚💫 This makes us the largest, and only, funder of artists in Appalachia located inside the region and controlled exclusively by Appalachians.

Last Friday, we gathered at the lovely @unionavebooks to ponder questions together. In theme with Volume 2, the discussion centered around how the concept of 'sacred' enters our mundane lives.

What’s a secret space in you want to stay sacred?
Why is it sacred to you?

Do you have a personal ritual? A habit or a routine that elevates your world? This can be as simple as how you get out of bed to as complex as a ceremony you follow.

Back in 2020 I got an invite from Jan Cohen Cruz to cowrite a chapter for the @AlternateRoots book. The task Jan and I undertook was chronicling the strategies that the org took over its 40+ years to live into its anti-oppressive values. We talked to all the former Executive Directors that we could and what steps they took under their leadership to make sure Roots was a place that attempted to live its values and not just give them lip service.

Alternate Roots has been a pivotal place in my journey as a Black Appalachian Southern artist and cultural worker. It has shown me what it means to be in struggle together toward a more just world and how doing community means that we choose to work through things together and chose to stay committed to each other when dominant culture tells us we should discard people when things get hard. This chapter reflects a lot of that.

I learned so much from the stories we heard, but also from Jan’s guidance and belief in me as a writer. I am proud of what we did together! I want to send a big congratulations to the editorial team! You did it. #ArtattheIntersections taken in ✨elsewhere✨ by @artattheintersections

Had a beautiful week in New Mexico at @Americans4Arts Conference. It was great to be on a panel about Rural Arts and Culture Coalition Building alongside other arts and culture leaders serving rural communities. Building coalitions is a strategy for our survival during the hard times and I was reminded that we can do more together than we could ever do alone. #ArtattheIntersections taken in Albuquerque, New Mexico by @artattheintersections
