A cymbal’s sound isn’t determined by the cymbal and the drumstick alone. 🥁 Where you strike it, which part of the stick you use, and the angle of impact all matter.

🔹 Ride cymbal
When playing a ride cymbal, the tip of the stick typically works on the bow. Changing the exact contact point and the angle of the stroke changes the balance between articulation and wash.
The tip can produce a cleaner, more defined stick sound, while moving toward the edge generally introduces more overtones and wash. 🎶

🔹 Crash cymbal
With a crash cymbal, the goal is different. The edge is best struck with the shoulder of the stick using a glancing motion, rather than driving the stick straight into it.
A more direct, perpendicular impact can put greater stress on both the cymbal edge and the drumstick. ⚡

🔹 Cymbal positioning matters, too
That’s why cymbal positioning isn’t just about comfort. Its position influences the angle at which your stick can naturally make contact.

What did drumming look like over 400 years ago? 🥁
Long before drum kits, modern notation or the drumsticks we know today, drumming already had its own techniques and written patterns.

The image shows a historical notation of a drum rhythm from Thoinot Arbeau’s Orchésographie, first published in 1589. In the accompanying text, Arbeau describes how the individual notes are to be played on the drum – including strokes made with one stick and with both sticks together.
What makes it fascinating is that drumming was already being documented and taught in detail more than four centuries ago.

The instruments, notation and sticks have changed considerably since then.
But the idea remains familiar: a rhythm, two hands and a pair of sticks.
More than 400 years later, we’re still playing.

Which drumsticks should you choose for electronic drums? 🥁

Short answer: you don’t need special “electronic” drumsticks.

With an electronic kit, the module produces the sound, so choosing a stick is mainly about feel, control, and comfort.

If you don’t have a clear preference yet, start with a well-balanced, wood-tip 5A. It’s neither too thin nor too thick, and you won’t have to completely readjust your grip when switching to an acoustic kit.

A lighter stick will usually create less mechanical noise on the pads and put less strain on your hands during longer practice sessions. But don’t look at weight alone—the balance point also determines whether a stick feels quick or sluggish.

The type of pad matters too. A tightly tensioned mesh head can produce more rebound, while a rubber pad usually feels harder and more direct. The right stick is one you can control without tightening your grip to fight the rebound.

One more thing: always use sticks with smooth, undamaged tips on an electronic kit. A stick that has become chipped or splintered on acoustic drums or cymbals can wear down—or even damage—a mesh head. It’s worth keeping a separate pair specifically for your electronic kit.

Our starting recommendation: a well-balanced 5A.

If it feels too bulky, go thinner.
If it disappears in your hand, choose something more substantial.

It doesn’t matter whether the stick is labelled “for electronic drums.”

What matters is whether it works naturally in your hands. ⚡
