The power of art, the power of conversation can find a way to bring all of us together, propel knowledge, understanding, perspectives, and empathy.

On 22th June 2022, Art Breath x SOAS : In Conversation With Sultan Sooud Al-Qassemi.
The conversation covered the power of art and art from the SWANA region, Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi’s work, realising art exhibitions, on founding the Barjeel Art Foundation, on contemporary art and art from modernity, adding to the History of Art as we know it, on his lectures on the Politics of Modern Middle Eastern Art, on education, and social media, architecture and his book Building Sharjah, co—edited with Todd Reisz, and much more.

Thank you to everyone who registered with SOAS and zoomed in for the talk, thank you to Sultan Sooud Al-Qassemi for the conversation and presentation, thank you Marina @marinacostanza , Harris and Korede, SOAS Alumni and SOAS University.

« We don’t just take photographs, we return to them »— Maryam Eisler

As we enter September and summer days become a memory, we return to the feeling of sun glistening its rays, through the magical photography and book “Summer of 69” by photographer @maryameisler

Eisler’s book is comprised of her photography work— Polaroid photographs alongside a series of photographs Maryam Eisler took in the Hamptons over the past 5 summers.

The photographs imagine summers of the late 60’s and 70’s, capturing the feeling of possibility, of love and light. The images propel that feeling into the now, colouring grey days, bringing warmth and hope into our beings. A feeling can last within us, and as Eisler states— « The summer is gone, but the feeling—the feeling is forever. »

Maryam Eisler’s photography makes us travel, not just to the Hamptons, but also to a chosen time, a feeling, a place of our choice that each of us might hold dear that sits in our hearts that beams out rays of sun and hope.

With the Polaroids shot on a Polaroid SX-70, the same model the artist’s father gave Maryam Eisler for her Birthday in 1976, as she mentions, « […] I could hold time in my hands. »

Eisler’s photography shares with us the viewer, heartbeats of warmth and glow she captures so beautifully.

We absolutely loved Nour Saleh coming to spend a day with us at Snaresbrook Arts Project.

Nour’s workshop incorporated drawing, play and dance for our service users, based around the theme of food and the cultural memories that are evoked through food and cuisine, with a particular emphasis on Nour’s Lebanese heritage.

Nour Saleh is the founder of Art Breath ( @artbreathorg ), in addition to being an artist, moderator, writer and co-founder of Art Journeys.
She is a graduate of Central St Martins: BA Fashion Print; SOAS university: MSC International Politics; Camberwell College of Arts and University of the Arts London, Foundation.
Nour has hosted multiple art sessions and workshops, and has moderated and developed events on the arts, ‘In Conversations’ and book talks.

~

Snaresbrook Arts Project (SAP), founded in 2008, is a day service supporting adults with learning difficulties through arts and crafts.

The visiting artist workshops at S.A.P are facilitated and organised by @lbcuratorial .
