Cooking with Monsters - my senior project!

This series was inspired by my “Stay-At-Home Monsters” project (on my page) if you’d like to see. I struggled a lot with this project but I had so much fun making it & I love the end result!

Sorry i’ve been so inactive, a lot of things have happened since graduating. But i’m here to stay now!! 😁

Every time I do a series like this it makes me fall more in love with illustration & being a creative.

I hope you guys enjoy!! :)

a re-designed book cover of Junji Ito’s Tomie for my graphic novel class. 😁 eyes & perception are a key theme in this book so i wanted to focus on that. i really liked doing this! (original is 2nd picture)

faces have always been my downfall, but recently i’ve been having a lot of fun with these!
i have a lot of room for improvement but overcoming my fear of the figure & face is giving me a lot of confidence. :)

the 3rd painting for my “Stay-at-Home Monsters” project!
this is by far my favorite one. as you can see from the sketches, i struggled with finding which monster fit the setting.
my absolute favorite thing about painting is detail work, & i love this so much because of the detail!

throughout this series i tried to utilize wonky perspective & lines to create an “uneasy” feeling, adding to the spookiness. & since perspective isn’t my strong suit, it worked out perfectly 🤪 i always get caught up in thinking everything has to be perfect before i finish, but i’m glad i didn’t let that get in the way of this project. the time constraint also helped me to overcome my struggle with being a perfectionist.

here’s the second painting of my “Stay at Home Monsters” project!
i really loved doing this one. for most of the other paintings i was stressed & struggled to find out what worked in the setting. but in the process of painting this one, it didn’t feel like work. i just let my mind take over, and even though i made a lot of mistakes in the process (since i wasn’t 100% what i wanted it to look like when i started), i love the final result. it’s projects like these that keep me going & inspire me to further my passions.

i knew i wanted to capitalize on the fear most children have, a monster lurking under your bed. but instead of making it too scary, i wanted to leave room for imagination. maybe he just wants to play! maybe he’s waiting for his other monster friends to join him. or maybe he does want to scare you. who’s knows! ☺️

let me know what y’all think this guys name should be! :)

“Stay-At-Home Monsters”
9x12 watercolor

i’m so excited to share my favorite project i’ve ever done with y’all :)

I created 5 illustrations of monsters where they don’t belong - at home.
some are scary & ominous, some are cute & harmless.

this series was prompted by a painting i did last year (2nd picture). the goal of that painting was to focus on doors and hallways. i wasn’t planning on adding that lil guy when i started, but one thing led to another & my subconscious took over my paintbrush. and i’m SO glad it did! i feel like that painting was a crucial turning point in my life as a creative. i learned not everything has to be textbook - sometimes the best things are created when you stop thinking about angles or perspectives & just let your mind take over.

for this painting, i wanted to focus on light play and the interaction with the monster & the natural environment. i love how this turned out, even though it was definitely the hardest to do & took the longest.

i will be posting the rest soon & sharing more about this process as i go along :)

if y’all think of a name that fits him leave it in the comments!! :))
