Frieze Los Angeles 2026 closed its seventh edition at the Santa Monica Airport campus with a palpable sense of renewed market confidence, drawing over 32,000 visitors from more than 45 countries. Blue-chip galleries dominated headlines with seven-figure transactions, while the Focus section for emerging galleries proved equally robust, with multiple solo presentations selling out entirely. Institutional collecting was a defining feature of the week, with the joint Hammer/LACMA/MOCA fund, the California African American Museum, and the City of Santa Monica Art Bank all making targeted acquisitions. Beyond commerce, the fair carried a distinct cultural weight, from Amanda Ross-Ho’s durational performance rolling a 16-foot inflatable earth around the airport campus, to Patrick Martinez’s anti-ICE neon installation greeting visitors at the entrance. Taken together, the edition felt less like a market event and more like a genuine gathering point for a Los Angeles art community that appears, after a difficult few years, to be finding its footing again. by @artcollector

The space reads less like a private residence and more like a living archive—dense, layered, and deeply personal—each work in conversation with the next. Maxwell’s collection reflects a sustained and thoughtful commitment to emerging artists, evident not only in his acquisitions but in the way he opens his home as a site of support and exchange. Through his five-week Flower Residency (@flowerresidency), he hosts artists in an environment that encourages experimentation, dialogue, and community, extending his role beyond collector to active patron. In an ever-changing art market, Pace Gallery announced it will close its Hong Kong exhibition space at H Queen’s later this month, citing slower market growth and declining demand. The decision reflects broader shifts in the region’s art scene, as several international galleries reassess their physical presence amid economic uncertainty and changing collector behavior in Asia. Pace confirmed it will not renew its lease after Alejandro Piñeiro Bello’s exhibition ends on October 18. A spokesperson noted that the space “is no longer serving us,” adding that with the lease ending, the gallery will “take the opportunity to exit.” Despite the closure, Pace will retain its offices in Hong Kong and Beijing to continue supporting artists, collectors, and projects across the region. by @artcollector

Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa is one of the world’s most prominent contemporary art collectors, best known for his record-breaking purchases of Jean-Michel Basquiat paintings — including Untitled (1982) bought for $110.5 million and another Basquiat for $57.3 million. In 2016 alone, he spent nearly $100 million on works by Basquiat, Koons, Prince, Calder, and others. His collection also includes pieces by Yayoi Kusama and Yoshitomo Nara, and he founded the Contemporary Art Foundation in Tokyo to support emerging artists. This fall, Sotheby’s will inaugurate its new global headquarters in New York’s historic Breuer Building with the landmark sale of The Leonard A. Lauder Collection, a once-in-a-generation assembly of 20th-century masterpieces. The centerpiece of the 24-lot evening sale on November 18 is Gustav Klimt’s Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer, offered at auction for the first time alongside two of his rare Attersee landscapes.
