About Last Night ~ Material Matters Preview ✨

The Gujral House in New Delhi opened a major group exhibition celebrating young contemporary artists engaged in material research and manipulation.

The exhibition, spread across 8 rooms, makes space for new conversations on art and craft, architecture and design, language and mark-making, colour and form. Each room is dedicated to a material or a method of production and the dialogue between the spaces is created by us, the audience. As we walk through the house, we become active participants, identifying overlapping subjects, themes and sometimes even materials.

We notice these leakages from the very first room of Fibre Arts with Aradhna Chaudhary’s metal rope and wood installation ‘Sound of Roots’, or with the clay figure ‘With Time and Strength’ amongst paintings exploring the body, or with the drawings on the walls that accent the ceramic works.

Material matters thus is a site for discovery, and you and I are the sleuths. Get your magnifying glasses and visit the exhibition before 30th November.

Stay tuned for the announcement of ASAP’s November Art Murmur, a panel discussion on the exhibition curation and themes, hosted on-site. If you’re in New Delhi, come join us and chime-in on the relevance of material and how we use it to think through memories and histories, both personal and public!

Congratulations @alaiiagujral @artdemic.india

What do you hope people take away from Material Matters?

For curator Alaiia Gujral, it begins with curiosity — an openness to discovering new artists, encountering unfamiliar materials, and looking at art, craft and design in new ways.

Across eight material worlds, Material Matters invites visitors to look closer, explore different ways of making, and find their own points of connection with the works.

Come with an open mind. Leave with a new perspective.

READ THE WALL | Material Matters

Before words are read, they are made.

From letterpress and painted text to carved scripts, the written word takes on a physical life — pressed, inscribed and shaped by hand. Each mark carries the trace of its making, blurring the boundaries between language, image and object.

In Read the Wall, words become more than a means of communication. They become material.

Discover this and seven other material worlds at Material Matters.

RAW METAL | Material Matters
From raw material to finished form, metal holds the traces of its transformation - shaped by force, guided by process, and brought to life through the artist’s hand.

In Material Matters, the sculpture room explores the material as both medium and meaning, inviting us to look closer at the textures, forms and possibilities that emerge when material meets imagination.

Eight rooms. Eight material worlds. Endless ways of seeing.
