The first issue of fourteen mag is live now. I think we have come up with something special. Take a look, won't you?

Shoutout to all the wonderful, wonderful artists and writers who we got to work with for the past several months to bring this issue out. I'm usually very good with my words, but the gratitude I feel for you all leaves me speechless. Thank you for your community and generosity and your insights and your love. You are the echo of Jai Bhim personified. What a blessing to be contemporaries with y'all. 💙💙 by @artedkar

For a month, 1Shanthiroad Studio/Gallery watched a residency unfold not as a process of “curating three artists,” but as an encounter between three very different worlds—worlds that collided, leaked, travelled, disappeared and reappeared within these walls.

Boris Colin began with the authority of the record, asking what happens to everything that falls outside the file. Jit Natta set archives in motion, through stories, performance, food, language and objects that refuse to remain in one place. Rahee Punyashloka followed granite from geological matter through extraction, image-making and digital circuitry, asking what happens when the ancient and the computational share the same substrate.

Over the course of the residency, these practices began to find unexpected points of contact: between the archive and its gaps, evidence and fiction, stone and screen, memory and invention. At 1Shanthiroad Studio/Gallery, where histories, conversations, exhibitions and artistic practices have accumulated over decades, the archive was never quite a fixed thing. It was something being handled, questioned, displaced and made again.

This exhibition emerges from that process—not as a conclusion, but as a moment within it. A moment to stay with these strange connections a little longer, and to see what surfaces when the archive is understood not simply as a place where things are kept, but as something that is constantly being made, misplaced and remade.

1Shanthiroad is delighted to invite you to the exhibition, opening on 2 October, 2026 at 4pm, at 1Shanthiroad, Bengaluru.

Come with some time.
The exhibition will take some.

In Rahee Punyashloka’s "Field Notes from Begumpura," murals, stories, and speculative visions imagine Begumpura, the “City with No Sorrows,” as a world where Dalit and Adivasi communities are free from the violence and constraints of caste.

Drawing inspiration from South Asian mural traditions, Punyashloka reclaims the visual language of ethnography to center self-determined voices, histories, and imaginations.

Come see the murals and encounter a different vision of the future at the Fowler Museum.

Food is not only a matter of sustenance or taste. It can carry memories of family, place, labour, exclusion, pleasure, survival, and change.

Across India, there are rising restrictions on where meat can be sold and seen. Policies stigmatising meat-eating enforce an oppressor caste, culinary lexicon—obscuring a section of society. Simultaneously, a misconception persists, equating Dalit everyday food practices to non-vegetarian dishes. In reality, Dalit cuisine goes beyond meat consumption, consisting of various vegetarian dishes and vegetables—typically seasonal varieties growing wild.

Our next #BeyondThePlate session will explore different literary and artistic representations of Dalit food practices, and how they negotiate representation, identity, and belonging—in the context of caste-based violence and Dalit resistance in India.

The panel—featuring @artedkar @shahu_patole @thebigfatbao @rajgoody—will discuss representation of food (or its absence) from mainstream media, and how their respective works spotlight Dalit identity, experience, resistance, and joy. They will relate how—through their distinctive praxis—they situate food as both oppressive and revolutionary.

Meet the artist behind our latest Galleria installation, "Field Notes from Begumpura." Rahee Punyashloka (b. 1993, Bhubaneswar, India) is an artist, writer, researcher, and experimental filmmaker based out of Bhubaneswar and New Delhi, India.

Working across disciplines and mediums- including, drawings, installations, text, video, online interventions, and socially engaged publishing- he seeks to illuminate the vastly unrepresented/underrepresented artistic history of the anti-caste struggle and the Dalit identity. He has recently been awarded the Emerging Artist Award by the Foundation for Indian Contemporary Arts (FICA).

"Field Notes from Begumpura" imagines a future where Dalit and Adivasi communities live free from the violence and oppression of the caste system. Inspired by the 15th-century poem “Begumpura” (“The City with No Sorrows”) by Guru Ravidas—one of South Asia’s earliest visions of a utopian society—the project takes the form of speculative ethnographic field notes documenting this fictional casteless world. What does it mean to carry a caste identity when the skill is gone but the caste never left? I have the name. I have the lineage. I have, apparently, some form of gravitational pull toward the craft that I cannot fully account for — call it guilt, call it ancestral memory, call it the body’s long, inarticulate grievance. What I do not have is the skill. But what does it mean to grieve a cage?

Opening August 9, "Field Notes from Begumpura" is an ongoing project by artist Rahee Punyashloka that imagines a future where Dalit and Adivasi communities live free from the violence and oppression of the caste system.

Reclaiming the colonial conventions of ethnography, Punyashloka transforms a historically oppressive mode of documentation into a tool for self-representation and liberation. Drawing on South Asian mural traditions and the visual languages of Dalit and Adivasi communities, the installation celebrates artistic practices that have long been marginalized while envisioning new possibilities for justice, dignity, and belonging.

The murals are accompanied by a zine created by Punyashloka and Bao, a Dalit designer and illustrator, which expands on the stories, symbols, and imagined histories woven throughout the installation. by @artedkar

MOSFET Metaphysics; or, How to Uncompress a .DBAV File

Lecture/Performance/Theory-Jam with Vishal Kumaraswamy, Mithran RT Samuel, Suvani Suri, Praveen Ashokan and Rahee Punyashloka

5th August, 5:30 PM
At D-53, Vadehra Art Gallery, Defence Colony, New Delhi

As part of FICA’s ongoing exhibition ‘towards minor gestures: intensities in the making’, we invite you to a Lecture/Performance/Theory-Jam as part of Rahee’s project Fossil/Compression.
This session gathers practitioners and thinkers of porous boundaries, image entanglements, and anti-caste speculation, to lay out the stakes and possibilities of anti-extractivist image-making in today’s techno-scientific zeitgeist.
How can the marginalized body imagine itself outside registers of surveillance? How can artistic creation refute logics of compression/reduction? How to inaugurate images, rituals, and protocols that defy encasing of value as mere data?

The exhibition is on view till the 7th of August.
