Installation “Asraar al jamaal” by Kawtar Ouh @kawtarouh

The installation is a part of the Hammam.Steaming Stories exhibition @hammamsteamingstories , held in March 2023 in Antwerp (Borgerhout).

Kawtar is a Moroccan-Belgian artist and a self taught photographer who comes from Brussels. With typical hammam products, Kawtar recreates the warm atmosphere of the hammams where women experience intimate moments. “I wanted to work as beldi (pure, authentic) as possible. Trying to revive a dying tradition.“

Kawtar grew up in a traditional Riffian household where she gets a lot of inspiration from. Her parents were born in Nador. Digital isn’t the only style she applies, Kawtar photographs also in analog and Polaroid. Received from her grandmother, a source of inspiration.

Here is a throwback to an exhibition held in March 2022, titled 'Filling in what was left out'.

The exhibition is the result of the VISUAL STORYTELLERS project, a 1-year talent development program by @theworldofrosestories for aspiring designers with a diverse signature - or makers who have a strong affinity with other cultures and stories. Through master classes, individual and professional coaching, ROSE stories create space for artistic development with an emphasis on visual storytelling and stimulate cultural entrepreneurship.

The artists featured in this exhibition are new storytellers in their own right, with a unique ability to convey narratives through visual art and digital media. Some of the narratives evolve from personal journeys while others are more analytical or theoretical in approach, but all the works tell stories that are as personal as they are universal. Touching different topics such as mental health and sexuality via different media brings all the work together into an exhibition that can be read and enjoyed on a variety of different levels.

“Ailin Mirlashari was born and raised in Stockholm, with a mother from Balochistan and father from Iran. Ailin reflects and investigates on contemporary themes through magic realistic interpretations. Her practice is broad, she expresses herself through video art, photography, painting and textile art. A central driving force is the shaping of personal reflections and collective experiences.”

“The themes addressed in my photography and films come from my life experience as a female artist living between two cultures. ‘Americana’ x ‘Marakchi Lifestyles.’ Something in me craves to tell the stories of my home from a widened point of view.

This photo entitled “Mint Freaks,” is a Moroccans take on the work of Diane Arbus.”
