Hey friend. It’s been a while. How are you?  Yeah, me too.  I’m scared. I’m sad. I’m angry. Furious. Disappointed. I’m tired. But I also feel a lot of hope, which I know is a privilege to feel during times like these.  I also know I feel more motivated to continue staying informed, to take actionable steps, to find time to rest and recharge, and to feel joy because the only way we can make it through what’s happening right now is by taking care of ourselves and more importantly, taking care of each other.  What’s happening right now to our friends in Minnesota isn’t okay.  What’s happening to our immigrant friends isn’t Christ-like.  The murders and kidnappings happening in our country because of politics are unjust and inhumane.  Our Black and indigenous friends have been telling us this for decades, centuries, that what’s been happening here in our home shouldn’t be normal.  Now, I understand some of you might be new to this, so welcome. I’m glad you’re here.  (1/2 CONTINUED IN COMMENTS) by @artforceiowa
Hi friends. Just checking in on you. Have you taken time to rest? Have you given yourself permission to cry, to scream, to say what your heart is feeling? Have you felt joy today? I’m learning that resting and recharging aren’t the same thing. Bedrotting is a great way to rest. And doing the things I love that bring me joy like playing the sims and cooking are great ways to recharge. So I want to encourage you to rest and recharge. The journey we’re in will require it because what’s happening right now is just the beginning. From mass deportations to federal funding freezes that are harming nonprofits like ours from receiving our federal funds to support youth in Central Iowa to dehumanizing people for who they love and how they identify to ending programs and policies that have benefited women, people of color, people with different ability levels, poor people and so much more. It’s overwhelming and it’s scary to witness the people we care about being harmed. For some of us, we fear for our own safety. All of this makes it hard to stay focused and hopeful when we feel paralyzed and fearful. Now, I’m not saying gaslight yourself out of those very real feelings. Feel them and then shake them out of your body. Write them down on a piece of paper and then rip it up. Yell them out. Do what you gotta do to get those feelings out of you without harming yourself and those around you. And then, take a deep breath. Focus your energy on doing good, small things because we know small things add up. Find your community. Volunteer with your favorite organization doing the work that matters to you. Donate your dollars if you have spare change. Take someone to the grocery store who is afraid to go alone. Stay informed with trusted sources. Call congress. Pray, and act on it. There’s a pastor I follow on the socials. Pastor Villodas. He gave a sermon about peacemaking that has stayed with me, and I want to share it with you. Peacemaking can lead to persecution. Peacemaking can be a dangerous act. To be a peacemaker means disruption of false peace, while resisting disconnection. (1/2) by @artforceiowa
