When we can’t characterize something quickly, or it has multiple interpretations, it’s ambiguous.

We know ambiguity is hard, but for many, the definition itself is…ambiguous. Let alone how to pronounce it!

When faced with ambiguity, we feel anxious, uncertain, and prone to bias against new ideas.

But here's the cool part: we can do something to feel more confident in this uncertainty. Building our “Tolerance of ambiguity" is a critical skill in a turbulent world.!

So, next time you're feeling that fuzzy uncertainty, remember, it's an opportunity to lean into that discomfort, to see what incredible solutions you can uncover, and to find a new path forward.
And the most influential factors to building Tolerance to Ambiguity?
Creativity and Mindfulness.
Shocker, right? But also, not too complicated.

What’s a creative or mindful practice you’ve set aside because you’re too busy dealing with uncertainty and ambiguity?

“Cats Eyes Removed.”

As a veterinarian, I’m not going to lie. I have actually said these words before (poor kitty with glaucoma, felt so much better afterwards!)

Welcome to WTFriday - where I share an ambiguous sign and tie it to a message to help you face uncertainty with more confidence.

For most tourists, seeing this sign in the middle of a random road causes a moment of confusion.
Am I watching out for blind cats wandering the road?
Is the kitty apocalypse happening with zombie, unseeing cats looking for brains?
Until your brain looks for a more plausible explanation
Cat’s eyes must be those shiny things in the middle of the road.

Context is everything when it comes to interpreting uncertainty.
Think about a moment at work when you got an instruction or update that lacks proper context.

Maybe it’s a cryptic message from a colleague, a new task dropped on your plate, or a report that seems to contradict everything you thought you knew.

Or maybe it’s a joke. Because this is a key element of humour - leading us down one path and diverting. When we realize our mistake, we laugh. by @artfulscience

Buckle up, Buttercup! And Gladys! “Danger Ahead. Fasten Safety Belts and Remove Dentures”

Welcome to WTFriday - where I share an ambiguous sign and tie it to a message for work, but mainly for a laugh, because it’s Friday.

Well, this sign manages to be both highly specific (remove dentures) and terrifyingly vague (danger ahead). Is this an extreme roller coaster or a terrifying road? What about real teeth, or what if you have caps? Braces? Maybe there are denture stealing trolls under the bridge?

How do you react when faced with an alarming sign and you don’t know what’s ahead? Maybe management has warned you that there’s a major organizational change, a budget cut, or layoffs, without clear details, but you know that it’s definitely time to brace yourself and hold on tight to your dentures.

This sign attempts to resolve uncertainty about the dangers ahead, but instead creates more confusion..

What’s an instruction or directive that you were given that made no sense at the time, but in hindsight seemed clear as glass? Share your thoughts in the comments below. by @artfulscience

If you aren't familiar with #adhd hyperfocus, here's your lesson.
I'm recovering from surgery so can't do much.
I also love to learn new things but I hate being bad at those things (inevitable).
So, to try to learn more about water and pigment and different types of wet paper in order for my card not to look derpy, I knuckled down and got to work.

I spent the whole day today painting different versions of our childhood cat, Jenny.

I didn't stop to eat.

I struggled to pull myself away to take my senior doggie for a 15 min walk.
I'm thinking about painting cats as I type this out.

Hyperfocus can be a superpower. Problem is, you don't have a choice about what you're going to find fascinating.

Also, watercolour is hard. IDK if this is an ADHD trait but I have never drawn or done any painting, but wanted to do something artistic for fun. It turns out I picked the hardest kind.

PS doing anything creative boosts your well being and helps you to face uncertainty with more confidence. What's your creative flavour? by @artfulscience

Welcome to WTFriday - where I share an ambiguous sign and tie it to a message to help you face uncertainty with more confidence.

Sometimes, you can’t “Just do it” Because physics.

Other times, you can do it by believing in yourself and knowing your clearance.
Confidence is necessary to adapt and manage the uncertainty that flies our way and to know when to persevere.

However, it’s also important to learn when it’s time to turn around.
Like this garbage truck that got stuck under a downtown bridge…

“⬆️San Jose
⬅️ San Jose”

Am I in a Bugs Bunny sketch? Did I take a wrong turn at Albuquerque?

Am I already in San Jose? Costa Rica or California?

Or maybe Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Northern Mariana Islands (hey, I lived there for a few months!), Philippines or Uruguay?

Maybe San Jose is a metaphor for the friends we make along the way…
