Exhibition Announcement!

We're just two short weeks away from opening Grid Makers by Edmonton artist @kimmccollumart.

Deeply inspired by weaving, the practice, people and history, Grid Makers features dozens of paintings and mixed media works. Within Grid Makers, figures weave, knit and breathe new worlds into being. They unmake themselves and their surroundings, remaking it into something new.

Grids grow and expand across each scene, some floating like balloons, others spilling across the floor, some becoming part of the walls and furniture. In this surreal world, it often becomes difficult to separate the figures from their work from their surroundings, challenging the assumption that there are divisions between maker and creation.

The works are subtle, textured and detailed, demanding time and attention.

Be sure to stop by the Art Gallery of St. Albert between October 22 and November 21 to experience Grid Makers in person.

Exhibition Announcement: Held in the Weft by Saskatoon’s Négar Devine-Tajgardan opens on Tuesday, November 3rd in our Staircase Feature Gallery.

Held in the Weft is a conversation with the past. Working in her home studio, Négar weaves brightly coloured bias tapes, recreating patterns that were a familiar sight throughout her childhood. Négar was born and raised in Iran, immigrating to Canada in 2016. The more time that passes here in her new home, the more her own identity and perceptions adapt, leaving some threads behind.

While the patterns celebrate the artist’s heritage, the materials are modern, a nod to Négar’s new home. Alongside the bias tape are loose threads. These threads come from family photographs that were printed on fabric, and then painstakingly unwoven.

As the warp and weft of the weavings merge, so to do memory, tradition and culture. What is Held in the weft is an ongoing journey.

Held in the Weft opens in our Staircase Feature Gallery on November 3 and will be on view until January 23, 2027.

We are thrilled to share a first look of Held in the Weft by Négar Devine-Tajgardan.
For Négar, Held in the Weft is a conversation with the past. Working in her home studio in Saskatoon, she weaves brightly coloured bias tapes with thin strips of paper, recreating patterns that were a familiar sight throughout her childhood growing up in Iran.

In contrast to the deep reds, golds and greens of the bias tape, the pearly strips of paper feature tiny family photographs. They are from across her life, blending moments of the past and present. As warp and weft merge, Négar’s weaving hands connect to culture and heritage, to a life that was, is and will be ever evolving, treasuring what is precious and embracing what is new.

What is Held in the weft is an ongoing journey, a window into an experience of immigration that is shared by so many. The exhibition is now on view and runs from November 3 to January 23, 2027.

The Sky’s the Limit by Edmonton’s Leah Gravells is nearing the close. As we approach the sunset of this show, we wanted to leave you with some words from the artist.

“Mankind looks to the sky. Each day the rise of the sun gives hopes and dreams of a brighter day. The land itself gives us sustenance and renewal. The water gives us life. The sunset gives us rest and regeneration for the next day. The sky is also about turbulent times – an approaching storm. Landscapes can evoke our strongest emotions. Landscapes have timeless appeal. Man’s solitude against the forces of nature.” Leah Gravells, 2025.

Be sure to spend some time with Leah’s stunning quilts before 5 pm on Saturday Oct. 31. The Gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, and we are open late every Thursday, until 8 pm by @artgalleryofstalbert
