NATURITA ... Leslie Ament of Naturita and Art Goodtimes of Wrights Mesa will be hosting a sharing of local stories about UFOs with special guest Jami Allred at the Naturita Community Library in Colorado on July 9th at 6 pm

“Living on the Slope for the past almost 50 years, I’ve heard some amazing stories about UFOs,” said Goodtimes, “particularly from the Black Mesa area of Dolores County.”

Bring your own story of unusual sightings to share.

West End Stories & Poems, happening on the second Thursday of each month, is free and open to all ages, thanks to the generosity of the library, a Town of Telluride CCAASE grant, private donors and Talking Gourds’ Fischer and Cantor poetry contests. The library provides free refreshments.

TELLURIDE ... Durango Poet Laureate Esther Belin will be the featured presenter at the Talking Gourds’ Stories & Poems series at the Wilkinson Public Library on Tuesday July 21 at 5:15 pm.

“Esther just directed the successful Four Corners Poetry Festival at the Durango Public Library,” explained Talking Gourds Director Art Goodtimes. “We are delighted she’s willing to make the drive up into the mountains to share her Indigenous poetry with us.”

Esther Belin (Diné) is among the myriad of indigenous peoples on the planet to survive in urbanized areas. She is a graduate from the following institutions: UC Berkeley, IAIA, Antioch University. She considers the following locations her homeland: LA, Durango, Diné bike'yah. Her writing and art grows from and is an offering to the collective humanity, bila' ashdla'ii.

Esther is the author of two poetry books and coeditor of The Diné Reader: An Anthology of Navajo Literature. Belin’s visual art combines a variety of disciplines and works to reframe the mythical primitivism often associated with Indigenous cultures. She is a citizen of the Navajo Nation and lives on the Colorado side of the four corners. Belin is a member of Saad Bee Hózhǫ́: Diné Writers’ Collective and teaches in the Native American and Indigenous studies department at Fort Lewis College and in the low-residency MFA program at the Institute of American Indian Arts.

Co-sponsored by the Wilkinson Public Library and the Telluride Institute, this literary event is free and open to the public of all ages. Attendees are encouraged to bring a story or poem of their own, or of someone they like, to read aloud.

For those that like prompts, this month’s will be “Water” although stories or poems on any subject are welcome.

In August Stories & Poems Telluride’s live poetry reading happens on the 18th at 5:15 pm in the Wilkinson Public Library magazine room with Santa Fe poet Scott Nicolay teamed up with Wrights Mesa’s Art Goodtimes. by @artgoodtimes

TELLURIDE ... Poet, performer and poetry activist Lawton Eddy of Salida will be the featured guest for the Talking Gourds first Tuesday Bardic Trails virtual reading series July 7th at 7 pm MDT.

“Lawton came to town for a special Pop-Up reading this past May,” said Talking Gourds Director Art Goodtimes, “and I was gob-smacked by her reading. She was simply terrific. So we’ve invited her back for Bardic Trails.”

Originally from New England, Eddy has been a poet since childhood. She was co-creator of the Sparrows Poetry Festival in Salida where she’s lived for the last three decades and has toured since 2005 with the performance group River City Nomads. She currently runs the Season of Words poetry series at the A Church performance space in Salida with fellow nomad Craig Nielson.

She describes writing poetry as “a practice of capturing word play and rhythm to infuse the ordinary stuff of life with mystical musings.”

Her poems have appeared in regional magazines and newspapers and her many performances include the Telluride Mushroom Festival, Crestone’s Poem Fest, the long-running C3 (Creativity Challenge Community) educational program in Denver as well as at City Lights Bookstore in San Francisco.

My blurb for her 2021 debut poetry collection, Chasing Grace: poems of a life, states “Her pursuit of grace rubs off on you in reading these poems, like the sweet stain of a fruit you want to lick from your fingers, hoping you too will be infused with her contagious joie de vivre.”

In the book she coined the word “harmonasm” (harmony + orgasm) for that feeling you get when it seems that nothing is missing. As she explains, “There’s something in me that revels in the lusty words that poets throw at life.

For those that like prompts, we are suggesting “Chasing Grace,” although poems on any subject are welcome. Virtual attendees are encouraged to bring a story or poem to share each month after the featured reader -- their own work or someone else’s.

The Telluride Institute’s Talking Gourds Poetry Program hosts the free Bardic Trails virtual zoom series on the first Tuesday of each month. The Wilkinson Public Library continues as our collaboration partner, with to by @artgoodtimes
