An unprecedented shutdown of #India’s capital as @cockroachjantaparty rally is refused permission for a protest on 10 October. All trains to New Delhi & Nizamuddin stations cancelled; 57 metro stations shut; inbound flights to Delhi asked to provide passenger manifests 48 hrs in advance; 15 detention centres, some of them stadia; >25000 security forces being deployed; and many house arrests.

@_sabahgurmat hits the streets of Delhi for Article 14.

1. A video published by The Hindu newspaper said the police were going to mosques in Old Delhi to advise people not to protest. In Old Delhi, at least three people confirmed they were informed by the mosque committee and Nagrik Suraksha Samiti in consultation with the police, to advise people not to go and especially not to send their children. Here, Mohammad Shaan, 32, says that while those from his mosque want to attend the protest, they were also seeing their names cut in the “NRC…SIR exercise”.

2. Spotted while crossing central Pandit Pant Marg in New Delhi. Dozens of these empty buses had a ‘Special Hire Police Duty’ sign. Several more empty white buses are stationed near India Gate near Kartavya Path. by @article14live

Coerced confession

False claim of video evidence

54-day wait to arrest a riot “mastermind”

Unavailable phone messages with an unnamed “Boss” as proof of conspiracy

These were among the grounds on which the Supreme Court quashed Mulla Afroz’s NSA detention, after 620 days in jail, writes @article14live.

More than five years after the Delhi police entered the Jamia Millia Islamia University and beat students on 15 December 2019 when a protest against a controversial citizenship law became violent, Delhi High Court has dismissed petitions seeking accountability and compensation for the police violence, noting the police cannot be inactive if a peaceful protest turns violent.

The backdrop said ‘Gaddar (traitor) Gyanoo Must Go” in a reference to the election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, but Cockroach Janata Party founder Abhijit Dipke devoted a large portion of his speech in Mumbai’s Shivaji Park to criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, referring to him as “narcissistic” and constantly playing the “victim”. Some excerpts:

“Mumbai Police is the Original Pookie”

“Gandhi is the Soul of this Nation”

“You Can Never Be Bigger Than Gandhi or Nehru”

“Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar is the Backbone of India, Nehru its Mind”

“Ambedkar, Nehru Gave Us the Right to Vote When Many of us Didn’t Even Know What Elections Were”

“You Would Still Be a Chaiwala if There Was No Democracy” by @article14live

On a day that India remembered Mahatma Gandhi, they came in the thousands to Shivaji Park, Mumbai. They sang, they chanted, they waved the tricolour peacefully, referencing everything from Rang de Basanti to Marvel comics. Organised by the Cockroach Janata Party, they came to respond to the threat to India’s democracy by one of the men sworn to protect it: Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

A new report has found that #Himalayan #glaciers are melting faster than ever.

This has increased the risk of floods in the mountainous region and further downstream, with the number and size of unstable lakes growing.

The recent #Nepal disaster, as well as previous ones in #India, has put the spotlight on the government’s unrestrained ‘development’ in a geologically and environmentally sensitive region.
