I went because of the art and I stayed for the Green Chile Burger…yum! I love that Charlotte is the kind of place where artists decorate the walls of independently owned bars, breweries, and coffee shops. Small businesses supporting small businesses. 💪

If you’ve read this far, I’d love for you to think about some things with me:
Who are you supporting with your dollars? Is it the people living and working in your own community? Or is it out-of-town investment firms, national chains, and billionaires? Where do you spend your lunch hour? Your Friday nights? Where do you bring your parents and friends to hang? Where will you buy your holiday gifts this year?

That’s all for now. 😘

I’ve been selected as part of the Fall 2026 cohort of the @thelovebolt Kitty Garner Energizer Initiative! 🎉

They support community connectors in their mission to get people in the same room and connect on a human-to-human level. I’ve always wanted ArtintheQC to go beyond being an online resource, and it’s time to get things moving. We are officially hosting events again!

First up:
A WORKSHOP
From Self-Critic to Believer: An Artistic Release
📅 Saturday, November 7 from 12-4pm
This is taking place at a private retreat-style location thanks to @ellafaeart and @artbeyondfoundation. Link in bio for more info and to register.

Then:
A FUNDRAISER
Not An Artist: An Art Show and Interactive Creative Experience
📅 Saturday, January 30 from 5-8pm at Sip City. Tickets go on sale November 1.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 is the official GRAND OPENING of @activationstudios! 🥳🪩

I was able to check it out the other day for a little preview. These are the cool things that caught my eye during the visit.

Make sure to come out on Friday from 6-10pm to celebrate the stubbornness and passion of these Charlotte artists (particularly
@stencilspray) who fully refuse to disappear.

When they lost access to their last space, they found something new. And seemingly overnight, it’s evolved into something so magical. A third space for the creatives and the weirdos and the bored folks. This is what you’ve been looking for.

Now located at 514 E 15th Street
Connected to @substrateclt

Gallery Hours:
4-10pm Wed-Fri
2-10pm Saturday
12-10pm Sunday

Artists featured in this post:
@heatherkostellart
@theleftbrainedartist
@creationsakebyerikarose
@pumpurrnickel
@cosmicpropaganda
@imhereforplants_
@stephaniechapmanart
@onlyfromem
@makingthingsclt
@markdoepker

🦋My one-day Wet Cyanotype class at @artsplus.clt with @mertclt was so much fun! This ended up being equal parts art, science, and happy accidents. We learned the history and how the process worked, watched Mert demo, and then we were unleashed to create!

Building the layers and watching an image slowly emerge felt a little bit like alchemy. It was definitely an afternoon well-spent. 💫

They also shared info on what to buy (it’s actually relatively accessible) if we wanted to create more at home…and yes, I probably will.

My friends at Arts+ routinely offer ways for you try an art style with 1-day workshops, or dive deeper into a specific practice with their 6-week classes.

These 6-week classes start in September:
⭐️Acrylic Painting 101
⭐️Drawing 101
⭐️Special Topics in Mixed Media: Botanicals
⭐️Screenprinting 101
⭐️Special Topics in Painting: Plein Air
⭐️Collage 101
⭐️Digital Photography 101

🦋I’ve personally experienced the consequences of someone else’s criticisms and judgements worming their way into my internal soundtrack. For a while there, I lost myself. I didn’t trust her. I didn’t believe in her. I was ashamed of her.

There was a point in my healing journey where I hit a wall and the multiple therapists weren’t making a difference. “Doing the work” wasn’t working. I needed something drastic.

In a spurt of desperate, creative energy, I grabbed a piece of cardboard and let the soundtrack go. This creative process dramatically altered my outlook and helped me move forward.

If this sounds like something you need, I invite you to join me for a half-day expressive arts retreat.

From Self-Critic to Believer: An Artistic Release
📅Saturday, November 7 from 12-4pm
📍Private retreat location in West Charlotte
🎟️$95. All materials, tea, and snacks provided.

🖼️ I finally went to see “Caravaggio | Revolution” at @themintmuseum and it was a delight! Caravaggio is known as the father of the Baroque movement and this exhibition provides a full survey of the “misshapen pearl” art style.

There are a lot of paintings in here that made me do a full DOUBLE TAKE! Did you catch these quirky little tidbits?

“Caravaggio | Revolution” is open at the Uptown location now through October 25. This special exhibit is an additional $10 on top of museum admission. Want to save? Head there on Wednesdays from 5-9pm and only pay the $10!

Thanks to @danielleariasart for snapping my picture out front. The rest of the images were captured by me. taken in The Mint Museum by @artintheqc

💫 CHECKING IN with a favorite artist of mine: Miss Dru Swan aka @drudsy.

Her feminine portraits and figures feel both intimate and monumental, pulling you in, whispering ethereal invitations through the dreamscape.

Influenced by multiracial existentialism woven with threads of Black, White, and Chickasaw ancestry, Dru’s paintings are a colorful, intuitive exploration of self. Dru uses the body as a place where introspection and imagination intertwine with the feminine, the other, and the mystical.

The work flowing out of her brush is spontaneous, refusing to wait for anyone’s approval. “I just feel a color or a form and suddenly it needs to be on canvas,” she says.

READ THE ARTICLE: Learn about how I discovered Dru as a student two years ago, what she’s been up to since, and look more closely at two paintings with me through the article linked in my bio. 🔗

As part of the @artwalksclt Street Art & Identity Workshop last Saturday, we did a deep dive on the River of Life Mural by @artbyabel. Based on feedback from a community panel, Abel picked six figures to highlight, larger than life on the exterior wall of @westendfreshseafood.

From left to right you’ll see:

⭐️Dr. Bertha Maxwell-Roddey - One of the first Black principals to lead a predominantly white school in Charlotte. She founded UNCC’s Black Studies Program, and co-founded the Afro-American Cultural Center, now the @hbganttcenter. She founded the National Council for Black Studies, and over her career served on 50 different boards and commissions.

⭐️James ‘Fergie’ Ferguson II - Co-founded North Carolina’s first integrated law firm. Co-counsel on landmark Supreme Court case Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education case. Served on the board and as General Counsel for the ACLU for 12 years.

⭐️Julius Chambers - A co-founder of the above mentioned law firm and lead counsel on the Swann case. He successfully challenged segregation in schools, housing, and public institutions. His car, home, and law office were bombed separately in retaliation for his efforts. He went on to lead the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and serve as chancellor of North Carolina Central University.

⭐️Hattie ‘Chatty Hatty’ Leeper - Charlotte’s first Black female radio DJ, she was on the air for almost two decades. Known for her warmth, charisma, and commitment to uplifting community organizations, Hattie was an absolute legend. She was inducted into the Black Radio Hall of Fame in 1989.

⭐️Harvey Gantt - In 1963, he sued to become the first Black student to attend Clemson University. He served on City Council and was then elected as Charlotte’s first Black mayor where he championed policies that stimulated a period of major economic growth.

⭐️Sarah Stevenson - As a concerned mother, she helped integrate the PTA in the late 1960s. She worked on an advisory panel that helped CMS create a plan to bus students for desegregation in the 1970s. She became the first Black woman elected to public office in Mecklenburg County when she won a seat on the Board of Education in 1980. taken in Charlotte, North Carolina by @artintheqc

Have you visited Charlotte’s CREATIVE REUSE CENTER yet? @upcycleartsclt is truly the bee’s knees. 🐝

They sell insanely affordable art and craft materials, many priced by weight. They have all the items you need to finish those random craft projects you’ve got lying around. They offer a low pressure entry point to crafts you haven’t tried yet. And they have super affordable workshops (I just took a photo embroidery class for $10)!

Basically, their entire mission is to make creativity accessible, which is obviously amazing. I’m so glad they’re here. 🎨🌈✨

And YES, they take donations (only by appointment)!
