Contemplating next moves with my artwork in the company of Nicholas Poussin and John Singer Sargent @nationalgalleriesscot . I exhibited as a student with Poussin at The Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester. I am finding my practice very cyclical at the moment I keep coming back to subjects I looked at a long time ago.

Do you like black and white paintings? I think they’re very immediate. Kathe Kollwitz knew the power of this and rejected painting to make prints that had impact and were easy to distribute so her message went further afield. I especially made this series portable like a poster. I’m now considering whether I really need to make a bigger series perhaps they’re enough on their own? 24 in all. Ready to exhibit but 2 going on display in Edinburgh on Friday. 6 going to a very special place next year. Dm for details.

Do you notice details?

Objects make me feel comfortable they create dynamic shapes, narrate the story and add colour. Some become old friends and some are discarded for another series. I have used them for many years. Starting with found object sculpture, at the Slade School of Art using found objects to create art and now they they appear in my oil paintings as major players in the scene.
