Should you (ever) pay to show your work in a gallery? (Comment “GALLERIES” and we’ll send you the link to our workshop) The short answer: no. Galleries make their money by selling your work and taking a commission on each sale. They show artists whose work they believe they can sell to their collectors. When a gallery charges you for wall space, it’s a different model. The show isn’t curated, and any artist willing to pay gets in. After 35 years in the art world, we’ve seen how much time and money this costs artists. Once you understand how galleries really work, it’s much easier to spot the opportunities worth your time. Our 1-hour workshop, Get Your Art Into Galleries, shows you how. It’s just £19, with two limited-time bonuses included. Don't miss it! Comment the word “GALLERIES” below and we’ll send you the link. by @artistmentoring
How do collections find emerging artists? Next week, Jo Baring joins us on The Art Ladder to share how collections and prizes discover new talent, and what artists can do to get noticed. Jo is the Director of the Ingram Collection of Modern British & Contemporary Art. In 2016 she set up the Ingram Prize to support emerging artists. Past winners have been nominated for the Turner Prize, and their work has been acquired by the Tate and the Government Art Collection, among others. She’s also the author of The Untold Story of Sculpture, named one of The New York Times’ most anticipated non-fiction books of 2026, and hosts the podcast Sculpting Lives. Comment MAIL to be the first to know when doors to The Art Ladder reopen, where we share interviews (like this) and advice for artists. by @artistmentoring
No reply from a gallery? Don’t be afraid to follow up... (Comment “GALLERIES” and we’ll send you the link to our workshop) Gallery owners are often a one-man band, running everything themselves. If you haven’t heard back, a gentle reminder is completely fine. And remember, galleries can follow an artist for a long time before they make an approach. Keep your website and Instagram up to date, because you never know when they’ll come back for another look. After 35 years in the art world, we’ve put everything we know about approaching galleries into our 1-hour workshop, Get Your Art Into Galleries. It’s just £19 and it includes an exclusive bonus, 30 Questions About Galleries, Answered (only available for a limited time) Comment the word “GALLERIES” below and we’ll send you the link. by @artistmentoring

What do galleries (actually) look for? 🤔 (Comment “GALLERIES” and we’ll send you the link to our workshop) Every gallerist we’ve spoken to looks for 3 things: ✔️ Quality: your best work, presented well ✔️ Consistency: a signature or voice that runs through your work ✔️ Activity: group exhibitions and opportunities that show you’re committed to your practice After 35 years in the art world, we’ve put everything we know into our 1-hour workshop, Get Your Art Into Galleries. It’s only £19 and it includes an exclusive bonus, 30 Questions About Galleries, Answered (only available for a limited time). Do artists really need to have gallery representation to get into private collections, corporate collections or an art advisor's radar? (If you want our step-by-step guide to getting into galleries, comment "GALLERIES" and we'll send you the link.) We asked art advisor Julia Rosenbaum this question, and this is what she told us during our live session on The Art Ladder... If getting into a gallery is something you've thought about, or tried without success, we created Get Your Art Into Galleries to take you through the 5 steps: 1️⃣ Knowing why you want a gallery 2️⃣ Finding the right gallery for your work 3️⃣ Understanding what galleries look for 4️⃣ Approaching galleries professionally 5️⃣ Navigating the gallery relationship It's built on our 35 years in the art world, and it's available for only £19. Comment the word "GALLERIES" below and we'll send you the link 👇🏽 by @artistmentoring
Where do buyers (actually) find art online? Comment 'SELL' below and we'll send you the link to access our 90-minute training, Sell Your Art Online. After 35 years in the art world, and mentoring over 1,000 artists, we’ve found there are 3 main ways: your website, Instagram, and online marketplaces. Each one comes with its own trade-off. Sell Your Art Online in 90 Minutes, helps you decide which one’s right for your work, so you can stop spreading yourself thin and start selling sustainably. Right now, it also comes with two limited-time bonuses: a Q&A answering your online marketing questions, and a 30-minute training on the 5 types of buyers. Comment ‘SELL’ and we’ll send you the link. by @artistmentoring
Whatever your age and wherever you are in your career, there is a gallery out there that’s right for your work. If you’d like to learn how to find it and approach it in the right way, comment 'GALLERIES' below and we’ll send you the link to access our workshop The key is fit. Working with a gallery is a long-term relationship, much closer to a partnership than a one-off sale, so it’s worth getting to know a gallery properly before you commit. Galleries need artists and artworks just as much as artists need galleries, and the strongest relationships are the ones where both sides work together. Comment 'GALLERIES' below and we’ll send you the link to our Get Your Art Into Galleries workshop for £19. It's only available for a limited time so don't miss it. by @artistmentoring
Does the art world really run on who you know? Next week, art historian, critic and curator Jean Wainwright joins us on The Art Ladder to share how networks in the art world really work, and where artists fit into them. @jean_wainwright Since 1996, Jean has interviewed more than 2,000 artists and curators for her Audio Art Archive, and 177 of those interviews are in the Tate Archives. She was a consultant and archivist on Andy Warhol's America for BBC2, curated Andy Warhol: My True Story in 2025, and is now working on a major project on the Venice Biennale and the networks behind it. Comment MAIL to be the first to know when doors to The Art Ladder reopen so you can watch the interview (and more like this) in full. by @artistmentoring
