In 1970, an exhausted Joe Cocker joined forces with Leon Russell for Mad Dogs & Englishmen—a traveling storm of soul, gospel, and rock ’n’ roll.

Written by Wayne Carson and made famous by the Box Tops, “The Letter” became something towering in their hands. Behind that enormous sound was a singer pushing himself through exhaustion, pouring everything he had left into the microphone.

This is the story behind that performance.

MC5 — KICK OUT THE JAMS
LIVE AT TARTAR FIELD, 1970

Before punk had a name, Detroit’s MC5 were already making rock and roll sound like a riot.

“Kick Out the Jams” became a battle cry for rebellion—but Wayne Kramer explained that the phrase started with the band heckling other musicians to stop their endless jamming and get off the stage.

What began as an insult became an anthem.

Here at Tartar Field, Rob Tyner and the band deliver it with thunderous guitars, raw lungs, and enough electricity to make the footage feel dangerous more than half a century later.

BEFORE LED ZEPPELIN OPENED FOR THEM, VANILLA FUDGE TOOK A SUPREMES HIT AND TURNED IT INTO A PSYCHEDELIC MELTDOWN.

“You Keep Me Hangin’ On” already had the heartbreak. Vanilla Fudge slowed it down until you could feel every second of it.

Towering organ. Thunderous drums. A voice that sounds like it’s fighting to escape the relationship it’s singing about.

In the clubs, people stopped dancing and crowded the stage to watch. Captured in a single take, their performance became a slow-burning breakthrough—reaching No. 6 in America in 1968.

Same song. A completely different kind of desperation.

Which version hits you harder—the Supremes or Vanilla Fudge?

THE YARDBIRDS — BLOW-UP (1966)

Swinging London, go-go clubs, and the unmistakable style of the 1960s. 🎸

The Yardbirds, featuring Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page together, take the stage in Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow-Up—a snapshot of music, fashion, and film colliding in one unforgettable scene.

TWO CHORDS. FOUR OUTSIDERS. AND A SINGER WHO SOUNDED LIKE HE’D CRAWL THROUGH THE SPEAKERS AND START A RIOT.

Formed in Los Angeles in 1965, the Seeds brought together Sky Saxon’s snarling vocals, Jan Savage’s biting guitar, Daryl Hooper’s hypnotic keyboards, and Rick Andridge’s driving beat. “Pushin’ Too Hard” captured all four at their most relentless—two chords carrying the tension of an argument about to boil over.

The breakthrough took time. Released in 1965, the single initially missed the national charts before finding its audience and reaching the Top 40 in 1967. Its raw sound and confrontational attitude helped lay the groundwork for punk, giving the Seeds a legacy far beyond that brief stay on the charts.

Who belongs alongside the Seeds in the roots of punk?

CREAM — STRANGE BREW (1967)

Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, and Ginger Baker—three formidable musicians turning blues into something heavier, stranger, and unmistakably their own. One of rock’s first supergroups, Cream brought psychedelic color and a jazz musician’s appetite for improvisation to the British blues explosion.

“Strange Brew” bottles that chemistry into a hypnotic groove, with Clapton’s cool vocal and biting guitar giving the song its beautifully sinister edge. Three musicians were all it took to make this much sound.

SMALL FACES — TIN SOLDIER (1967)

One of the most electrifying performances of the British rock era. Led by the unmistakable voice of Steve Marriott, Small Faces delivered a powerhouse of raw soul, explosive energy, and pure rock ’n’ roll. A band that helped lay the groundwork for what would eventually become Faces.

James Gang — “Walk Away” (1971) | Joe Walsh

Before Joe Walsh became a member of the Eagles, he was the guitarist, singer, and creative force behind one of the most electrifying American rock trios of the early 1970s: the James Gang.

Released in 1971 on the album Thirds, “Walk Away” became one of the band’s signature songs. Written by Walsh, the track combined a gritty guitar riff, an infectious groove, and lyrics about a relationship that had reached its breaking point.

But there’s an interesting twist to the story.

Despite the success of “Walk Away,” Walsh was already growing restless with the James Gang. He wanted to explore new musical territory, expand his sound, and move beyond the limitations he felt working in a three-piece band.

By the end of 1971, Walsh had left the group.

He would go on to form Barnstorm, establish himself as a solo artist, and eventually join the Eagles in 1975, bringing his unmistakable guitar style to one of the biggest bands in rock history.

The James Gang continued with other musicians, but the Walsh era remains the group’s most celebrated period.

And “Walk Away” remains a remarkable example of what three musicians could accomplish together.

Sometimes the song that helps define a band arrives just as everything is about to change.

Which Joe Walsh era do you prefer — the James Gang, his solo career, or the Eagles?
