Marsha Blovotnik is here, and she’s on a rampage! Lovers of long rants, family shenanigans, magic, and everything in between, gather round for this crackling, buoyant new play by Dan Kitrosser—running October 27-November 22nd at Artists Rep. Tickets on sale now! đŸ”Ș

About the play:
Marsha Blovotnik is angry. So angry! The whole world is fakakte, but for this Leftie Jewish Lesbian, it’s her sister Janice who really burns her tuchus. Janice invites herself over for Shabbos dinner and then shows up three minutes early. Who does that?!?

Just before her sister arrives, a mysterious ancestor gives Marsha a pot of magical chicken soup with the power to cure the world of its woes — if only Marsha can cool down enough to share a bowl of soup with her sister.

A buoyant, crackling comedy about how to live in a dumpster fire. đŸ”„

If Saturday’s first read is any indication, Marsha Blovotnik and the Marvelous Magical Chicken Soup is going to be delicious. 🍗

We began with designer presentations, with each designer giving us a glimpse into their world-building process. From music and scenic design, to props, lighting, and costumes, each element of design builds on the distinct voice and world of this play.

The reading kicked off with Maeve Stier and their accordion setting the tone—after just five days of rehearsal, the cast is already bringing incredible liveliness, warmth, humor, and chemistry to the room.

There are still three weeks left of rehearsal ahead, which means there’s so much more to come. The world will get richer, the performances will get sharper, and all of these already-electric pieces will have time to settle into place.

Get excited for this one. It’s going to be good. by @artistsrep

REHEARSALS HAVE BEGUN! đŸ”„

This week, Maeve Stier, Maria Porter, Miriam Schwartz, Robin McAlpine, and Adam John Roper (group photo, left to right) have come together at last to dig into this show. The rehearsal room was feeling cozy, with lots of thoughtful conversation, musical ideation, and some seriously good food.

We shared homemade challah with dates, baked by our multi-talented Music Director & Sound Designer Matt Cherub, and a caramelized cherry curd tart made by the pie wizard himself, Stage Manager Danny Rosales. So much care and thought goes into every aspect of production. It feels good to gather again, share food, and make something together.

This Saturday is our first full read of the show and our first glimpse into how all of the pieces of this production will come together. We hope you’ll join us when it’s done cooking. ❀ by @artistsrep

Spotlight on Dan Kitrosser, award-winning screenwriter, performer, and playwright of Marsha Blovotnik and the Marvelous Magical Chicken Soup! đŸČ

Dan’s work spans theatre, film, podcasting, and performance, bringing his distinctive voice and playful sensibility to every medium. His wit, heart, and playfulness come together in Marsha Blovotnik.

In the playwright’s own words, ”It’s a Jewish play, it’s a queer play, it’s a political play and it’s a family play (it’s also a funny play!) but at its heart, it is a play about how to stay in community with one another, and if we’ve lost it, how to return. That’s why it is extra special for me to come back to Portland with this play, directed by the brilliant Luan Schooler at Artists Repertory Theatre, I hope you’ll all fall in love with Marsha who is angry at all the right things in a very Left way, and that the laughter and rage of the Blovotniks will be chicken soup for our souls!”

You won’t have to wait too much longer to meet Marsha and the Blovotniks! Previews begin October 27th, with opening night on October 31st. Don’t wait too long to get your tickets! Seats have been filling up, so get yours while they’re available! by @artistsrep

Spotlight on Luan Schooler, director of Marsha Blovotnik and the Marvelous Magical Chicken Soup!

You may know Luan as Artists Rep’s Artistic Director. You may know her from the plays she’s directed, including The Bed Trick, The Storyteller, and The Thanksgiving Play. You may know her as a dramaturg, a champion of new works, or even a cheesemonger
However you know her, at the heart of it all, Luan loves bringing stories and people together.

For more than a decade at Artists Rep, she’s worked closely with playwrights to bring bold, original stories from page to stage.

This season, she’s working with playwright Dan Kitrosser to direct the second production of Marsha Blovotnik and the Marvelous Magical Chicken Soup, “a fabulous stew of Jewish, queer, and highly argumentative characters, spiked with mysterious and ancient relatives who pop up in the strangest places,” she shares.

“I’ve loved Dan’s plays for so long, and can’t wait to work with him on this delightfully playful comedy that asks big questions about how to behave in a world run amok.”

Rehearsals begin in just two weeks, and Luan is ready to roll up her sleeves and dig in. đŸœïž

A familiar face popped up in the @portlandmercury! It’s @oliviavavroch, props designer and set dresser for Marsha Blovotnik and the Marvelous Magical Chicken Soup, featured for her marvelous magical ability to create fake food! đŸ„˜

“What do dead yellow jackets, dryer lint, Model Magic clay, and cardboard coffee sleeves have in common? They’re all materials set dresser and prop designer Olivia Vavroch uses to make fake food, a medium that has become a particular niche of hers.

Vavroch’s food props have appeared in over a dozen plays, including shows by Artists Repertory Theatre and Third Rail Repertory Theatre; this fall, she’s making props for Artists Rep’s Marsha Blovotnik and the Marvelous Magical Chicken Soup, opening October 31.”

We can’t wait to see what Olivia “cooks” up this fall!🍗 by @artistsrep

It’s soup season!

September has arrived and Portland is already giving us a taste of autumn. Grey skies, gentle rain, and temperatures hovering in the 60s make it the perfect time to get cozy with a marvelous bowl of your favorite soup.

In Marsha Blovotnik and the Marvelous Magical Chicken Soup, soup just might have the power to heal the world
if she can feed it to the right person. But that’s absurd! How could soup—even magical soup—fix a world on fire?

...Could it?

You’ll have to come see for yourself. In the meantime, check out what the ART staff likes to whip up on a rainy day! by @artistsrep
