We’re heartbroken to tell you that Charles Edward Payne passed away on September 19.

Charles made the community more generous, more curious, more capable. He was a writer, poet, teacher, storyteller, mentor, and social artist. He was a big man with a booming deep voice and one of the best laughs that could fill up a room. The best smile in Wisconsin without a doubt. Somehow, none of that ever made him feel imposing. He made people feel safe by listening closely. Charles could always see something in you before you’d seen it. Then he helped you move toward that.

Charles did not want a funeral or traditional service, and his wife Liz has asked that, in lieu of flowers, cards, or gifts, anyone who wants to do something in his memory should consider donating to Arts + Literature Laboratory. Art Lit Lab was one of Charles’ places, where he learned, taught, read, curated, and where he made the community better. At Liz’s request, these gifts will support a special fund dedicated to making literary programming more accessible in Madison.

Liz and friends have built a website for Charles where you can read the story of his life and work. Through photographs you can witness the many communities he belonged to.

There will be a memorial gathering in spring 2027, with more information to come. For now, if you knew Charles, tell somebody a Charles story. Write it down. There are people who take up a lot of space in this world. Charles had the rarer gift of making more space around everyone else, and we will miss him very much.

Join us for ✨Story Sparks: Creative Comic Making to Get Your Ideas Flowing✨Tuesdays, Oct. 13 - 27, 6-8 PM. Sign up for one session or all three!

✨This three-part workshop series with artist and educator Lauren Lauter, explores creative drawing and writing exercises for comics and graphic novels. Each two hour class centers around a different storytelling structure designed to spark creativity, build confidence, and generate new ideas for visual narratives.

✨October 13th: List Exercises
Using prompts and observation to create list-like comics inspired by works such as “My Friends” by Tara Gomi and “Things to Look Forward To” by Sophie Blackall.

✨October 20th: Small Moments
Delve into memoir comics—personal stories and fleeting memories that reveal deeper meaning through words and images.

✨October 27th: Journey Comics
Follow a character (or yourself) from one place to another, inspired by stories like “The Missing Piece” by Shel Silverstein. Short journeys can lead to big revelations. taken in Arts + Literature Laboratory by @artlitlab

🎷✨ STROLLIN' MIDDLETON IS BACK
Sat, Sept 12 | FREE | 12pm-8pm

Four incredible acts. One unforgettable day of jazz.

🌟 Headlining: Kyoko Oyobe Quartet (6PM), the NYC pianist and composer who's held down legendary spots like Smalls & Fat Cat, playing alongside local jazz greats Ben Ferris, Jon Hoel, and Rick Flowers. Her sound moves through Be-Bop, Brazilian, and Free Jazz like nothing else you'll hear this year.

🎺 Also on the bill: Marques Carroll Trio (2PM), straight outta Chicago, with the Hollywood Bowl, Montreal Jazz Fest, and a stint with the Count Basie Orchestra under his belt.

Plus TRILOBITE (12PM) and FEESTET (4PM) round out a full day of sound.

Bring your blanket, grab a bite from @downtown_middleton restaurants or bring a picnic, and stroll on through. 🧺🎶
