Tarek Atoui’s site-specific installation Hold, created for the Hyundai Commission at Tate Modern, reconfigures the ontology of sound, translating acoustic phenomena into a tactile, spatial, and somatic experience.

Operating at the intersection of sculpture, technology, and performance, Atoui develops unconventional instruments crafted from glass, ceramics, water, and industrial elements. Activated by touch, breath, and mechanical movement, these sculptural objects transform the gallery into a resonant environment. For Atoui, listening ceases to be a passive auditory act; it manifests as a visceral phenomenon mediated through physical vibration, material texture, and bodily presence.

By dissolving the boundary between sculpture and sound, Hold reinterprets material objects as resonant bodies and repositions the audience as an integral component of the acoustic system. The project prompts a critical departure from conventional modes of hearing, exposing sub-sensory frequencies and subtle material interactions that routinely escape everyday perception.

Taking its title from the musical instruction for a slow, measured tempo, Steve McCurry: Adagio at Leica Gallery New York strips photojournalism of its frantic speed, insisting instead on the weight of the pause.

Uniting iconic masterworks, unreleased archival prints, and a new Bhutanese portfolio commissioned by Leica Camera USA, the retrospective spans over five decades of photographic practice. McCurry’s approach relies entirely on the quiet discretion of the compact Leica—an instrument that allows him to bypass the posture of the intrusive spectator in favor of empathetic witnessing. From Mumbai monsoons to monastic debates in Bumthang, his lens captures human resilience without exoticization or cynical staging.

Adagio reclaims the photographic print from the realm of fleeting documentation, transforming each image into a site of sustained contemplation where cultural specificity dissolves into a shared sense of human vulnerability.

Buildings are rarely inert containers; they absorb the collective pulse of their inhabitants. When a school closes its doors for good, an institutional silence settles over the hallways. Yet, within the decaying architecture of the former Yuya Elementary School in Gero, Japan, vanished voices have found a fragile, sparkling resurrection.

For the inaugural Gero Art Discovery 2026 festival, Tokyo University of the Arts graduate Yuka Numata has installed Replaying Afterimages—a haunting meditation on digital memory and collective ghosts. Suspended within empty classrooms slated for demolition, Numata populates the desolate rooms with spectral figures constructed from hundreds of plastic ironing beads hung on ultra-fine fishing lines.

Relying on optical perspective, these scattered points of color snap into alignment as visitors move across the floor, revealing student archetypes: a conversationalist near the window, an eager hand raised high, or a rebellious boy suspended upside down. Bridging digital point-clouds with laborious craftsmanship, Numata intentionally introduces pixelated distortions so her figures flicker like analog afterimages.

Embedded in a school closed by rural depopulation, Numata proves that while walls may crumble and rooms empty, the invisible frequencies of human life left behind can still catch the light.

Mythology is a living linguistic archive, a reservoir of archetypes that generations continually mine and reassemble. Rather than falling into nostalgic pastiche, Czech painter and sculptor Vojtěch Kovařík treats classical myth as an open, malleable vocabulary in his exhibition In Between at Mendes Wood DM.

Fusing the strict frontality of Archaic Greek figures with the blocky volumes of Eastern European memorials and Picasso’s 1920s classical phase, Kovařík recasts ancient deities as heavy-limbed figures grappling with history. His canvases possess a sculptural relief-like weight, achieved by mixing sand into paint. In works like Aglauros, Herse and Pandrosos, figures fold together in an architectural embrace, while smaller chamber paintings explore a poignant monumental intimacy.

Alongside canvases, terracotta reliefs bridge ancient materiality and ideology, synthesizing classical goddesses with Soviet labor heroes. Kovařík dismantles grand narratives, leaving behind the raw traces of individual vulnerability. By filtering ancient marble through contemporary doubt, In Between reclaims past symbols to narrate the psychological dilemmas of modern life.

Nature documentaries frequently frame the wild through epic gravity, yet anyone spending time observing animals knows the natural world possesses a wicked sense of humor. Evolution may be driven by survival, but it is delightfully punctuated by clumsiness and unadulterated hilarity.

The Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards 2026 embrace this joyful chaos, distilling a record-shattering pool of over 10,000 entries into 40 finalists that transform the animal kingdom into a global comedy stage. Among the standouts, Tanner Mansell’s Spicy Orangutan captures a primate radiating theatrical attitude in Borneo, while Lee Frost’s immaculate timing frames a damselfly peering through a leaf as though enthusiastically waving hello.

While these images offer pure, disarming joy, their underlying mission carries profound ecological weight. By provoking laughter, the competition dissolves viewer cynicism, reminding us that wildlife consists of kindred spirits rather than distant museum specimens.

Proving that photography does not always need solemn tragedy to move us, these finalists use well-timed humor to remind us why our shared biosphere is worth protecting.

Sculpture possesses a rare capacity to alter the geometry of space, commanding a room through the psychological weight of its presence. Catalan master Jaume Plensa @jaumeplensaofficial expands this dialogue between human anatomy and architectural scale with two concurrent solo exhibitions across the United States at GRAY galleries, bridging Chicago and New York.

In Chicago, Beyond Silence tests material resistance with massive carved-wood reliefs and towering columns. Its stunning centerpieces, Beyond Silence (Julia) and Beyond Silence (Maria), span an astonishing 28 feet, fusing wood and steel into architectural dividers where contemplative faces emerge from vertical slats. Meanwhile, the New York iteration, Remote, Serene, Ethereal, presents elongated painted bronze portraits alongside ephemeral charcoal wall drawings, framing the gallery in a continuous loop of solid mass and shadow.

Whether carving monumental timber or casting bronze archetypes, Plensa’s practice remains rooted in human interiority. Through scale, gravity, and sublime craftsmanship, he transforms cold materials into living monuments of grace, inviting us to pause and listen to the quiet spaces within.

When fashion escapes the rigid constraints of the commercial runway, it transforms into kinetic sculpture and living architecture. For nearly four decades, New Zealand’s World of WearableArt (WOW) @worldofwearableart competition has served as the premier global crucible for this avant-garde alchemy.

Staged against the vibrant multimedia backdrop of Wellington’s TSB Arena, this year’s exhibition, aptly titled GLO!, merged high-tech wizardry with organic forms. Claiming the competition’s highest honor, New Zealand designer Kayla Christensen captivated audiences with her triumphant creation, Sacred Nightfall. Drawing inspiration from Indigenous ceremonial cloaks, Christensen’s garment radiates a solemn, majestic grace through masterful textile manipulation and draped floral motifs, honoring ancestral traditions while reinterpreting them through a contemporary lens.

By integrating lighting technology, kinetic elements, and elaborate theatrical choreography, WOW strips away the utilitarian purpose of clothing. Giving global creators the freedom to turn textiles into living monuments, the festival proves that the most exciting art is the kind that breathes, moves, and walks right past you.

Regardt van der Meulen’s sculpture Awakened turns industrial steel into something unexpectedly fluid and alive.

Standing 1.8 meters high and over two meters wide, the work avoids overwhelming monumentalism, engaging the viewer in a direct, eye-level encounter. What initially appears as a solid structure gradually unravels into distinct elements: a flock of birds bursts from the twisted silhouette, substituting missing fragments of the torso.

Metallic flesh dissolves into space, as outstretched wings become an extension of the steel anatomy. The central tension of the work arises from this material contradiction. Steel traditionally implies weight, durability, and permanence, yet here it feels remarkably fragile and exposed. The body loses its solidity in the moment of awakening, turning physical erosion into a gesture of liberation. In van der Meulen’s hands, industrial metal ceases to be merely rigid material, evoking a living tissue capable of transforming, fracturing, and transcending its own boundaries.

The Bird Photographer of the Year 2026 @birdpoty competition, drawing over 24,000 entries worldwide, operates as both a visual archive and a rigorous inquiry into the optics of speed, light, and animal kinetics.

Henley Spiers’ @henleyspiers winning photograph, Sunball Rocket, isolates the moment a northern gannet strikes the ocean at 86 km/h. Golden evening light cuts through the water, transforming a high-speed dive into a striking study of kinetic force. Meanwhile, sixteen-year-old Parham Pourahmad’s Moonlit Night—awarded Young Bird Photographer of the Year—relies on graphic restraint, framing the silhouette of a Great Horned Owl against a glowing moon in a way that echoes classic nocturnal illustration.

By combining formal visual discipline with direct support for conservation, the project frames wildlife photography not as passive spectacle, but as a critical apparatus asserting the autonomy and fragility of natural ecosystems.

Berlin Art Week: An Odyssey Through Art

Every September, Berlin’s cultural pulse accelerates. Galleries, museums and temporary spaces turn the city into a moving map of images, memories, landscapes and questions.

This year, one question seemed to surface again and again: what happens when our familiar ways of seeing begin to dissolve?

The journey begins with On Landscape: Between Escapism and Disenchantment at @hausamluetzowplatz, where romantic visions of nature meet ecological catastrophe, and digital reconstructions confront landscapes that may no longer be recoverable.

At @Galerie_Mond_Finearts, Jonas Hödicke’s Escape Velocity borrows the language of physics to explore the desire to break away from an inherited trajectory — and to find the force necessary to change direction.

Elsewhere, at @galeriemichaelhaas, Strawalde turns memory, gesture and material into a visual language that resists easy interpretation.

And at @hkw_berlin, Not All Travellers Walk Roads moves beyond the conventions of the white cube. Sound, movement, ritual and memory become ways of thinking about humanity not as a fixed condition, but as a practice.

Perhaps this is where Berlin Art Week becomes most compelling: when exhibitions stop giving us answers and start changing the questions.

The awarding of the 2026 Rubin Museum @rubinmuseum Himalayan Art Prize to Bhutanese artist Pem Lham @pempoko_art signals a critical institutional shift in the engagement with Himalayan visual culture-moving from ethnographic preservation toward contemporary conceptual discourse.

At the core of Lham’s practice, developed within the grassroots ecosystem of VAST Bhutan in Thimphu, is a strategy of rigorous cultural translation. Reinterpreting the sacred heritage of Bhutanese masked dances, she elevates the folkloric spirit figure of Molay.

By liberating this canonical motif from the static confines of ritual performance, Lham rearticulates Molay as a surreal, contemporary archetype. Through irony, visual wit, and narrative fluidity, she transforms traditional folklore into a dynamic vehicle for interrogating modern female agency and self-determination. Lham’s work demonstrates that Himalayan tradition is not a static relic to be preserved under museum glass, but a living, generative framework capable of negotiating the complexities of global contemporary identity.

Zio Ziegler’s @zioziegler fourth solo exhibition at Almine Rech in New York @alminerech , The Tesseract, positions tactile maximalism, monumental bronze, and linear abstraction against the slick sheen of digital automation and algorithmic image synthesis.

Synthesizing references ranging from Masaccio’s structural weight and Jackson Pollock’s gestural energy to classical mythology and illuminated manuscripts, Ziegler constructs dense, highly layered compositions. At the core of the exhibition lies the motif of exile, framing contemporary ecological anxiety and technological alienation. By incorporating self-portraiture through the traditional iconography of the "Man of Sorrows" (Vir Dolorum), Ziegler transforms the canvas into an arena of physical confrontation, asserting painterly labor as a critical counterweight to machine autonomy.

Conceiving his works as tactile relics, Ziegler rejects the frictionless veneer of digital generation. The Tesseract argues that authentic human subjectivity cannot be algorithmically simulated, insisting instead that it must be forged through the visceral, demanding duration of physical creation.
