Lawrence Lessig, a professor of law at Harvard and author of Code and Other Laws of Cyberspace (1999), explored the distinction between what is known as East Coast Code, associated with rules established by political institutions, and West Coast Code, referring to the rules that technological architecture itself imposes on its users.

It’s a fascinating and, at the same time, deeply unsettling question.

For centuries, we’ve grown accustomed to thinking that the major decisions governing society were made primarily through political institutions, legislators, and mechanisms of democratic representation.

Today, a significant part of our digital lives is shaped by decisions made within technology companies, through systems we use every day but whose inner workings we don’t always understand.

This doesn’t mean that parliaments have lost their authority. It means that other ways of influencing and regulating human behavior have emerged, some of them extraordinarily powerful.

Who controls these rules? Who oversees these decisions? And how much room remains for individual choice?

I see extraordinary opportunities, but also a society that seems to have less and less time to understand what it’s creating.

Technology accelerates, institutions struggle to keep up, people adapt as best they can, and information multiplies at a speed that doesn’t necessarily translate into greater knowledge.

And I have a very personal feeling that we’re accelerating toward an enormous wall of stone.

And speaking of having fun, I’d like to end with a special thank-you to @snapit.space for inviting me to experience their photography studio, located in the main building of @lxfactory in Lisbon, where I also have my office.

The concept is simple and brilliantly executed: you walk into a professional studio, take a remote control, shoot your own photographs, and receive everything by email.

I’m not exactly a funny person, nor am I particularly entertaining in front of a camera. But for those who have that talent and, better yet, actually have friends, I imagine it’s an absolutely fantastic experience.

I did my best. Technology took care of the rest.

See you soon. In the new world.

We began at @jncquoi.avenida , moved on to @jncquoi.froufrou , and ended the evening at the bar at @jncquoi.asia …

Thank you, as always, to for a beautiful evening—and most of all to my darling German bestie🇩🇪 .

Here’s to strong, powerful women who have made their own way and continue to do so, owing no man a thing. I adore women for triumphing, time and again, in a world built for men.

God save women, champagne, and haute couture. Amen.

Some encounters make us see our own passion differently.

I feel genuinely privileged by the opportunity to get closer to Hans van Lemmen, tile historian and author of 5000 Years of Tiles, published by the @britishmuseum Press.

Through our conversations, I have been learning so much about something that has become a shared passion between us: the extraordinary journey of the azulejo.

And perhaps what fascinates me most is discovering that every answer leads to another question, another place, another culture, another connection.

Hans recently sent me a text with a phrase that immediately stayed with me:

“Azulejo — an encounter that begins in Arab hands.”

In his contribution, “The Pioneers of Blue”, Hans takes us back to the 14th and 15th centuries, to Paterna and Manises, near Valencia, and to the Moorish potters who pioneered blue-and-white tiles and ceramics in Europe.

He explains their techniques, their extraordinary visual language and how these early creations would later influence tile-making far beyond Spain.

Our conversations then opened another door: Niculoso Francisco Italiano and the movement of ideas, people and techniques across borders.

This is precisely what is exciting both @ogringo.75 and me.

We are discovering a story that is much bigger than a single country or period. A story of movement, encounters, influences and transformations ,and one that continues to inspire contemporary creation today.

Thank you, Hans, for your generosity, your knowledge and, above all, for these conversations.

I have the feeling that we are only at the beginning.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of accompanying the artist @ogringo.75 to @cicerolisbon for a special dinner presenting the new menu to the press, created by chef Alessandra Montagne in collaboration with executive chef Felipe Neves. The evening also marked the presentation of a new work by O Gringo, from the Blue One Collection, created in tribute to Alessandra and now part of the collection at Cícero.

But the biggest surprise of the evening was still to come.

Seated next to me was @robertaristow . As we talked, we realized something that made the encounter even more special: we had both studied fashion at the same university. Years later, there we were, sitting at the same table in Lisbon in a setting that, back then, neither of us would probably have imagined.

In a fantastic restaurant, surrounded by art, with incredible food and an excellent wine list, meeting again someone who started out in practically the same world as I did had a very special meaning.

We started in the world of fashion and, through different paths, eventually found our way into the art world. Two worlds that, in the end, have a lot in common: creativity, image, identity, culture and, above all, people.

Meeting Roberta was, without a doubt, one of the best surprises of the year so far.

Thank you, @paulodallanoramacedo for the invitation and for such a warm welcome. Always with your unmistakable elegance.

And thank you, Roberta, for this wonderful reunion. Sometimes life really does know how to arrange the seats at the table.

Art is, above all, creation. And every creation deserves protection.
Some books arrive at exactly the right moment. Deepfake e (des)caracterização da Intelectualidade, by Dr. Ana Miguel Neto Ferreira, was one of them — I read it twice and I am still thinking about it.
Representing an artist goes far beyond exhibiting and promoting their work. It means understanding the risks, knowing what protects them, and recognising where the law exists and where it has not yet arrived.
The responsibility of protecting an artist begins long before any contract.
This book is for everyone — not only for lawyers. @livrariasalmedina - La Smart Galerie , LX Factory taken in Lxfactory Lisbon by @artplus75

Over the past academic year (2025 - 2026) , I decided to deepen my understanding of a field that, until then, I had known mainly through its practical consequences: law.

My initial motivation was quite straightforward: to acquire the vocabulary and knowledge that would allow me to better navigate the legal dimension of my work from sales and acquisitions to consultancy and public and private contracts.

As I studied, however, I realised that the relationship between law and the art market runs far deeper.

A work of art is surrounded by legal questions almost from the moment it leaves the artist’s studio: copyright, contracts, droit de suite, provenance, authenticity, attribution, import and export rules, inheritance and, increasingly, technology and artificial intelligence.

A work may leave a studio almost silently and, throughout its life, cross borders, collections, estates, galleries and museums and with each step, different legal questions may arise.

From the artist’s studio to the collector, from one generation to the next, from the gallery to the museum, law accompanies the work for decades.

What began as a professional necessity gradually became a genuine intellectual interest. Studying law has required a different way of thinking one in which knowing the rule is rarely enough; understanding the system around it is what makes the difference.

Over this past year, I have had the opportunity to study subjects at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon ( Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Lisboa ) as part of this journey.

And from this experience, I have been left with one rather simple conclusion:

The more I learn about law, the better I understand the mechanisms that shape the art world. 2026-2027 start now.
