Tor Simen Ulstein
Atlantic wall*

presented @enterartfair by @skogartspace

In his ongoing project about the Atlantic Wall, Tor Simen Ulstein explores the abandoned bunkers along the coast of Europe, where the architecture of war remains as monuments to both human control and nature’s endurance. Ulstein seeks the ambiguous, allowing the motifs to speak in a language where the poetic and the political coexist.

Framing: Beech showcase frame with closed corner and museum glass.

Tor Simen Ulstein: The Atlantic Wall

“Photographs of past and future time” is a photographic project that portrays the monumental bunkers along Europe’s coastline. They were built by Hitler’s regime during the Second World War as protection against an Allied invasion, and today they are left to the inevitable forces of nature.
Drawing on his own childhood memories from holidays along the Danish beaches, the artist explores the bunkers’ mystique, their brutal and timeless aesthetic, and their historical significance, as structures caught between human creative power and nature’s slow dissolution.
The project follows a journey along the entire Atlantic Wall, a 2,685-kilometre-long defensive system stretching from Kirkenes in the north to the French–Spanish border in the south, consisting of approximately 6,000 bunkers.
The complex was constructed by the German Todt Organization under the leadership of Minister of Armaments and chief architect Albert Speer.

Today, the bunkers stand not only as remnants of another era, but also as mirrors reflecting the political and social tensions of our own time.
The project explores how the bunkers, even as abandoned structures, continue to carry a strong presence in the landscape.
They function as memories of war, but also as symbols of something unresolved in our own time. Through photographs of the meeting between sea and land, where erosion gradually eats its way into the coastline, it becomes visible how these foundationless concrete structures are slowly displaced, scattered across nature’s restless borderland.

A quick reminder: The Artproof team will be on a collective holiday break from December 22nd to January 4th.

The season greetings come with the photo above, from our recent team visit to the curator talk for the Anna-Stina Treumund retrospective at Kumu Art Museum.

As sponsors who helped reproduce many of the works for the museum's largest-ever solo photo art exhibition, it was incredibly inspiring for us to experience the final exhibition together.

Thank you for being part of our journey this year. ✨ by @artproof.eu
