Thank you to everyone who joined us for our launch panel alongside the 42nd PsyArt Conference @psyartfoundation at University of Essex.

Art | Psychoanalysis is a research group exploring where psychoanalysis and art meet and where they diverge. At our launch panel, we responded to Freud’s idea of the “picture-puzzle” through theories and artistic practices.

We will launch the research group of Art | Psychoanalysis via the Art and Psychoanalysis Roundtable Panel alongside the PsyArt Conference 2026 hosted at the University of Essex.

Speakers: Ana Cvorovič, Emilia Halton-Hernandez, Yuchen Li and Magda Schmukalla

Thursday, 25th June 2026
4-5pm Room: STEM 3.1 (Colchester Campus)

This roundtable launches the research group Art | Psychoanalysis. The aim of the research group is to bring together theorists, psychoanalysts, artists and researchers to study how art and psychoanalysis intersect and depart. The roundtable will start this endeavour by exploring how both art and psychoanalysis engage with experiences that seem absent from everyday consciousness but are present in the unknown undercurrents of human life.

This roundtable is open to everyone. You're warmly invited to join the discussion, whether or not you're registered for the conference.

The aim of the Art and Psychoanalysis research group is to bring together theorists, psychoanalysts, artists and researchers to study how art and psychoanalysis intersect and depart.

As a method to study the unconscious, psychoanalysis explores the human mind beyond speech, rationality, and the logics of reason. Art engages with the creation of forms, situations and encounters that capture unknown or missing elements of life. Both disciplines meet in the processes of creating new forms of signification to grasp and contain what cannot be signified, and yet their practices are shaped by different aims, techniques and visions.
