hi!

for those of you who I haven’t met yet, my name is Chantal (she/her) and I’m the host of Art Run Calgary!

Whether you’re already a friend of mine, or maybe you think this idea is cool, or you’ve attended an event, it means so much to me to have you here.

I graduated from the University of Calgary in 2018 with a BFA and have spent a lot of time making art and doing research in books, archives, online and in museums.

At the end of last year I was working part time when a friend emailed me an event that @literarysport was hosting where they were running in NY and looking at public art. My friend Trent said “you should do this here lol 🥰😇”

I’ve always believed that art can be a tool to educate people. Especially, in a world that can feel a little overwhelming and disconnected. It feels really special to be able to curate a route and share a little bit about Calgary’s public art, the amazing artists, and the nuances that exist within the pieces, only if we spend a little more time with them!

I’m hosting an event this Thursday before taking a brief summer hiatus. It’s been so fun crafting these routes and spending literal hours editing talking points. This next one might be the best one yet. I hope to see you there!

Feeling a lot of gratitude as the rain held out and the sun tried its absolute hardest to shine! Art run was also lucky enough to be featured in the fantastic programming @canadianarthop organized this year! 🧡

Our first stop at art run was at Nat Christie Park. We stopped and looked at sculptures from the Stone Sculptors Guild of North America’s 1998 Symposium.

Stop #2 was outside of Contemporary Calgary. We talked about the history of the building and architect Jack Long. We also talked about the relationship between the building and the sculpture outside by Jordi Bonet, titled “The Others” (1967).

Our third stop was at @herringerkissgallery to see the first exhibition since February, after a devastating fire forced their doors to close for 8 months.

Our final stop was back at Pumphouse Park where we saw “Comet” by Kathryn Fodchuck Dobbin. Our lovely friends at @sala.kape served us DELICIOUS drinks to end things off. 🫶🏻

Most repeated phrases during the run were “this is fun!” And “I’ve never seen this before!” Both of which make organizing art run a cup filling experience for me.

The final run of the year will take place on October 29 @ 6:30PM. There will be a sign-up for this event to try to keep the setting intimate and due to the nature of the space.
Stay tuned for the link release later this week!

@sala.kape is a woman-owned mobile café inspired by the Tagalog word “sala,” meaning living room - a place where people gather, catch up & spend time together.

SALA started as a way to get creative, concoct delicious drinks & bring people together. A lot of what they make is inspired by flavours they grew up with, so there’s always a little bit of home in what they serve. At the end of the day, SALA is a warm, welcoming, and a place you might want to hang around for a little while.

Jacque and Vianca will be at Pumphouse Park post run. We hope you’ll stick around, grab a beverage, and chat with some folks about what you learned at art run! by @artruncalgary

Wolfe and the Sparrows by Branden Vickerd was created in the likeness of a 1898 statue of General James Wolfe by John Massey Rhind. The original statue lived outside of what is now Contemporary Calgary from 1967 until the year 2000.

You can see the original sculpture by JMR in the middle right side of the first image.

The second slide is an image of Wolfe and the Sparrows by Branden Vickerd created in 2019. by @artruncalgary
